About patch

"Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the damn thing yourself"

Bio

I was secretary of the now defunct Carlisle Geological Society back in to 1970's. Apart from the academic sounding title we were really a mine exploration society. I have not been underground since 1973 but in the 70's our group did a lot of Pennine research, especially on the Hilton Mine in Scordale, near Appleby, Westmorland. A walk to the remains of this mine, organised by Cumbria Industrial History Society, has rekindled a long (too long) dormant interest. I am 60 now but have a 12-year-old grandson who is pestering the life out of me to go on geological days out so better get the boots on and look into the price of cap lamps and batteries. As at July 2008 I need to do a lot of catching up When living in Scotland I co authored a 50pp booklet on Mines and Minerals of the Ochils (rang of hills) and excavated the Alva Glen silver mine before it was later exploited. Am willing to share such knowledge as I have or to undertake original archival research in Cumbria (for free, of course) for anyone who is interested in that side of things
