"

Bio

I am a nurse, a part time potter and also worked as an archaeologist in the 80's. I am in the process of completing an MA in Experimental archaeology, whicere I learnt to make the ceramic structures for smelting copper and how to smelt copper using prehistoric technolgy. :D i was introduced to Mine exploration a while back now, have visited various mines in the southwest and have gone underground with The Plymouth Caving and Mining Group recently. My real interests do lie on the surface as I have started a project to to research the alternative uses of tailings and slimes- I have found 2 so far-I have grogged clay with tailings - grogging is adding the coarse (passed through an 80 mesh sieve) tailings to the clay, wedging(kneading) it in so that the clay becomes more refractory- more highly resistant to thermal shock! I love the Found Art also to be seen in mines. Also the Industrial Archaeology fascinates me and it is the story of the Modern period which is played before us in these mines. The exploration of old mines is a case study in action of archaeological site formation.
