Wyrley Common Colliery Coal Colliery (United Kingdom)

Situated just east of the Wyrley Grove and the other side of Lime Lane, and worth inclusion because of the extensive spoil tips evident today.
Very little known, started about 1850 but finished towards the end of the 19th Century. Very likely that underground working continued from the Grove who subsequently used the site for tipping. This sits with my memory of the site in the early 1960s when as a 16 year old lad I used to cycle over there and shoot rabbits. I have a memory of a loco in stem, and on another occasion seeing tipping trucks on the site. The old map shows sidings coming in from the east, but current layout of very extensive and high spoil tips makes this impossible. I think that the tracks were re-laid so that the siding or sidings emanated from the Grove. Sleepers discovered on site substantiate this.
I have no memories of any buildings associated with the colliery; I expect that they were buried by material dumped from the Grove. (RF 2020)
