The pit worked the High Main seam in the 18th century but was allowed to flood. The workings were drained by pumping at Friars Gose Colliery on the opposite bank of the Tyne around 1831 and this prompted Robert Todd and John Watson to consider reopening. Work began in 1832 and the first coal from the Low Main seam was produced in 1833. The colliery was on the north bank of the Tyne opposite Friars Goose.
