Pentewan Harbour Clay Port (United Kingdom)


Pentewan Harbour was substantially rebuilt by Christopher Hawkins between 1818 and 1826 for the export of china clay.In1829 Hawkins built a horse drawn tramway linking St Austell with the port. In 1874 Engineer John Barraclough Fell replaced the tramway with a narrow gauge railway this closed in 1918. The last trading ship left the harbour in 1940, the entrance is now completley silted up Pentewan Harbour is entirely cut off from the sea.
