Large, complex copper & gold mining and smelting centre on the north coast. Gold was reputedly first discovered by railway workers in the 1890s and the site was mined through until the early 1990s. Now the site of the Gold Ecological Park and mining museum. It is inevitably somewhat sanitised and glammed up for the tourist market and it's a popular day trip from Taipei but the site does have an incredible history and was a key economic driver for Taiwan. It was a major Japanese operation during the second world war when POWs from the Jinguashi camp were used as underground workers.
