The Caldon Canal even though so named goes nowhere near Caldon, instead it connected to Caldon Low Limestone quarries by 4 Tramways, the 1st was built in 1778, the 2nd being a rebuild of the 1778 route in 1785, the 3rd Tramway was built as a Plateway in 1804 and the final Cableway in 1847. The routes form a criss cross route from Froghall Wharf to Caldon Low and are well described in the Oakwood book on the Caldon Canal and at http://www.churnet.co.uk/caldontramroads.php, The NGR given is for Froghall Wharf.
