Bokey Sough Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

An ancient Coal Sough in Ripley in Derbyshire. Described as ancient in 1827 (by Mining Engineer and Surveyor J A Twigg of Chesterfield) on a commissioned survey of of Mineral tracts of Ripley belonging to C V & W H Hunter. The sough route is very accurately plotted on this survey and is thought to have had its tail at SK39590 51226. Today there is a rising of water at that NGR that runs briefly parallel to the Ripley Brook then turns into it. The water is Ocherous and has a significant volume which never seems to dry out. There are other features along the sough route which could be associated with it, there is one definate shaft on its route which has a cap and is known to the Coal Authority.
