Following what it seems to be a growing trend of turning old mines into touristic attractions, a defunct salt mine in the Romanian region of Transylvania has opened as an underground amusement park, history museum and spa.
After operating as a mine since the Roman Empire times until 1932, the former Turda Salt Mine(or Salina Turda) closed down to reopen for tourists in 1992.

It now looks like something from out of space.

Offering a unique climate, the mine is free of allergens and bacteria, which makes it idea for sufferers of hay fever or asthma. At 80% humidity it maintains a steady temperature of 11 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Its current attractions include a Ferris wheel, billiard tables, a mini-golf course, ping-pong, a bowling alley, and an underground lake with paddleboats.

It also holds a180-seat amphitheater to host the occasional concert.

To offset the darkness, bright lights hang vertically on strings from the 50-metre ceiling, illuminating dripping stalactites with a blue-tinged glow.

As the complex has grown in popularity over the last 20 years, Salina Turda has recently announced it will extend operations hours and schedule regular guided visits, begining August 15.

Maybe the long term future for Winsford ??

Seems to be a theme in Romanian salt mines. Salina Turda has an underground fairground type area, various other salt mines over there are now used as spars, must take a historical visit there oneday some of The chambers are pretty huge.

We are currently in Slovenia on hols. Stopping in the town of Velenje, there is the national coal mining museum which is part of a working mine.
Just up the road 30 Km is the mines at Mezica. They were lead mining there for over 300 years until a few years ago.
Again now a nice museum and underground loco ride of 3.5 Km to displays, our guide spoke very good English and was an ex miner, even wearing his miner's uniform jacket. However, for the more adventurous visitor, you can hire a mountain bike and ride several kilometres through the old workings right through the mountain. If that isn't to your taste, then join a guided canoe trip in the lower part flooded workings for a few hours, lunch included.....

I've been to 3 show mines in Poland, one of which is still working, they all had a completely different feel to anything in the UK.

They have a different approach to it over in Eastern Europe and hence the scope to do interesting things.
