John Morris introduced the suggestion at the recent NAHMO Conference to visit THE 19th CENTURY COPPER MINING and SMELTING HERITAGE of THE COQUIMBO REGION, CHILE.

PROPOSED PROGRAMME
The proposed programme is indicative at present and subject to amendment. It is neither exhaustive nor exclusive and it is subject to access permissions, as necessary.
Lectures:
history of Chilean copper mining and smelting in the 19th C, with a special focus on the Coquimbo-Tamaya-Brillador region
the geology of the region and copper deposits, both historic and current mines.
copper smelting and mining technologies and systems
transport systems, with a special focus on dedicated railway systems and international shipping
Field excursions:
La Serena History Museum
historic mining sites in the Tamaya and Brillador districts
Current active copper mining sites (subject to agreement with operating Companies)
Various 19th C smelter sites including but not limited to La Compania (Lambert), La Serena; Guayacan, Coquimbo; Tongoy; and Los Cerrilos de Tamaya.
Railway infrastructure will be considered in association with mining and/or smelting sites wherever such existed and where extant traces survive.
Cultural heritage sites associated with mining and/or smelting sites, for example the Eifel designed church and Protestant cemetery at Guayacan.
