no, I didn't know there was one either. Seems to be one of those local features previously unknown to the locals, like Walford speedway....

There was one in the area many years ago, some young lad fell down it one night, part of it looked real actually if I recall, but not sure where they would have filmed it.

The Emmerdale village (Harewood Estate) isn't far from the Greenhow orefield at all. Plenty of disused and uncapped shafts they could have used! Quad biking there as well, though I've never seen one go down a shaft, yet.

Probably some old stone mines nearer to the village, though most likely no plans lodged as pre 1840s. Just a little bit too far north for them to blag it as coal, though I can't imagine geological accuracy was on their agenda Wink

Not quite. I watch it. Some of the story lines over the years have actually been quite good. I'm not including a quad bike popping down a mine shaft.

I did a job at Darnbrook Farm between Settle and Arncliffe a few years ago. We had a few beers at the Falcon Inn, Arncliffe more than once. It used to be the original Woolpack. The Bitter was served from a jug and the Larger was from bottles served at room temperature. The Landlord was quite a character Big Grin

There were a few trials near were we were working and caves everywhere. There was one cave under the farmhouse accessible through a manhole cover outside the kitchen wall and the fridge was directly over the main drop.

It was on in our house too.

I'm pretty sure I've heard a couple of stories about quads and even pick-ups having similar mishaps in the states, although perhaps only myths arising from knackered vehicles being dumped down shafts?

From the timbers it looked like someones dig to me, anyone owning up? Big Grin

I always have a few WTF moments when I come back from a trip and haven't seen UK tv for a few weeks.

The bizarre Mummerset accents on Doc Martin are in a class of their own, the Queen Vic seems more akin to the Golden Lion in Soho, before it was turned it into another J D Witherspoon look-alike.

Aye, that Annie Sugden was a bit of a goer by all accounts and some of Jack's prize sheep must have been a temptation on those long, cold Yorkshire nights... Innocent

If you search on YouTube for 'emmerdale mineshaft' the first two results are an old episode where two kids fall down a shaft and are brought out by some cave rescue types. Looks fairly well done though I'm not sure having a load of farmers pulling the rescuers up tug of war style is a standard procedure...

Friday night & I'm looking up Emmerdale Farm on YouTube fer christsakes. Pub O'clock I reckon.

Just a thought, but linking this to a couple of other recent threads, maybe Copeland Council could hire the scriptwriters and cast to sort out Gillfoot. They seem to have picked up on the notion that heavy plant on old shaft tops might cause bother. Wink IP: 86.152.110.93

I think of Emmerdale when driving up to Nenthead as my route takes me through Wilks Hill.

It's the only time I do think about it though...
