The hydro people have pulled out at Cwmystwyth due to becoming aware of previously unseen issues. This is bad news.

I have before CADW two underground projects for SAM approval, the driving of a road through the fall in Lefel Fawr to enable direct access to the skipway, and the reinforcing with concrete of a sagging timber in the stull above the skipway.

The later will probably involve little expense, the former could require prefabricated steelwork. Obviously, the loss of the hydro leaves the trust dependant on grazing rent and voluntary contributions, for this and other essential maintenance of fencing around open stopes and shafts.

At this point in time we are financially healthy, in part due to the kindness of Welsh Mines Society. We will though have solicitors bills to meet relative to our latest acquisitions.

Bad news indeed Roy.

If not confidential, engineering or environmental issue?

Its basically to do with the chance of being successful against capital expense involved, but tariffs have been reduced by 20% and existing ones will be due for revision in 20 years time.

The 20% was bad news for a start, but there are some other issues.

Cwmystwyth

Scheduled Ancient Monument consent has been obtained for underground work in Lefel Fawr. This is in two stages, the first being the securing of the sagging timber above the skipway using concrete, with a cladding of packwall harmonious with that already there. It is hoped that the repair will be permanent and will present an outward appearance which would not be noticeable as a modern intrusion.

The second is the fitting of a steel supported roadway through the area which is currently passable through a very awkward plastic pipe. It will be of full walking height and I hope to expose the raid in the floor which carries the truck just inside.
I envisage (subject to final approval) a structure of steel RSJ uprights with similar crosspiece inside and outside with a third fitted half way through once the pipe is removed. Waste rock will then be used to packwall the sides. I hope again that the final appearance will be a neat and tidy job with a nice photographic angle on the truck from the outside.
This will enable men and materials easy access for maintenance of timberwork etc as well as improving rescue access should this ever be necessary.

It is interesting to note that this is the very first instance of SAM approval being given for underground works in Wales and is something of a landmark.

With the withdrawal of the Hydro the trust is now fully dependant on its small grazing income and voluntary donations and we express gratitude for the generous support of the Welsh Mines Society in the past.

The work in Lefel Fawr is going to cost money and to this end I would liked to bid once again on behalf of the trust for a share of calendar fund.
Comment as you see fit.

Further news is that the contracts have been signed for the transfer of Dinas silica mines to our associated company NAL, I await confirmation from the solicitor of finalisation, but at the moment is out of office/holidays just about everywhere.

If you have a Paypal account for the trust, post it up. Donations can be made via the "Friends and family" option, so no fee's get taken from the donations.

I'm quite happy to pony up a little something, as I imagine a good number of people on this site are, given we know how much effort this place takes.

Yes, I second that. I had a wonderful time there at the NAMHO conference and would like to visit more! I'd bung a few quid in.

I'm sure that folks would be happy to vote for a proportion of money raised going to CMT Thumb Up
However, see this thread:

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/Community/viewtopic.aspx?p=159092#msg159092

and get your photos in ASAP or there may not BE a calendar this year.... Sad

I'd quite happily see a proportion of the money go to CMT again. Roy does a lot for us all.

But as Sinker says... The calendar needs photos. It's not looking like it's going to happen at the moment :/

While that's true, we do need the photos to be in by about mid-September, so there is a hurry!

Natural Amenities Ltd

I am pleased to be able to announce that the transfer of the Upper Dinas Silica Mines to our above associated company has now been completed. Future access is therefore secure and now within the mining community.

It is proposed to make a site visit shortly in order to assess safety and other considerations prior to setting up a local support group.

If you would all like to share a joke to brighten up your day here goes.

I have just received a letter from the bank to the effect that in the event the trusts turnover exceeds £100,000 we will have to pay bank charges.
