Interesting section on mining in Greenland near the end of Arctic with Bruce Parry last night on BBC2. Available on iplayer. Worth a look to see the access arrangements to the mine! IP: 81.158.107.163

why? Don't go down t' mine, Da', there's plenty of coal in the shed... mining is a hard dollar, always was, always will be. It's not a job, it's a way of life.

I was surprised and disappointed by the general failure of Cornish miners to come through into the oil industry in the 80s. There were a lot of opportunities there, and you'd think that with the number of Treweeks and Pengellys to be found in all sorts of places, they'd grab it with both hands ... but apparently not.

CSM graduates certainly took it on and now they are to be found throughout the industry - it certainly did me no harm in Russia this year, and one of the young engineers from Combe Down went to Schlumberger, who are about as big a name as you could find anywhere

Seacore at Gweek were started by a couple of CSM graduates and are now part of Fugro, another top-shelf name.
