The first episode of the second series of Great British Railway Journeys will be transmitted at 18:30 on Monday 3rd January 2011 on BBC2. This program features a visit to the Godstone Quarries and focusses on the plateways installed there. Michael Portillo presents the program, and there may be the occasional shot of me answering a few questions.

It was a short bit nice and seeing Michael Portillo in a new warmback reminded me that my one was still in the washing machine and needed hanging up Blush

Some quite nice footage although it was a bit brief, I was hoping for a bit more time to be devoted to the quarry (they spent more time looking at some big greenhouse that wasn't even there any more, as it caught fire Angry )

I thought Peter came across well and Mr Portillo did seem to be enjoying his trip!

Well, I was expecting at least one factual error - it's normal with TV programmes - and doesn't detract from the presentation at all. A good number of the historical photos used were of the Godstone silver sand pits, not the firestone quarries. It was my fault, I told the production team to check the BGS GeoScenic photo archive for the 1893 underground photo of the working face with all the tools, and they clearly found all the other non quarry related images as well, put two and two together etc etc.

I'll give them 8 out of 10. One mark off for using irrelevant photos, and one mark off for not making the quarry bit a little longer. They left out all the footage of the exposed and conserved tramway which they took just round the corner from the bit they did show. And the Wealden got a good credit at the end just before the "Credits Squeeze".

The Greenhouse was part of our local heritage, I'll have you know, Alex. But if it hadn't burnt down, I expect the Luftwaffe would have done the job a few years later!

I didn't say I had one. The emphasis was on the word "want"!
