Does anyone have any information on the location and history of Wheal Tremar please?
Presumably this was a Caradon mine and the only thing I can find out about it was that in about 1853 it sold its 2 year old, little used beam engine, built by Thomas & Co at Charlestown Foundry to the Thames and Severn Canal where it continued working until at least the end of the century. Shipment of the engine was through Looe.
Thats it! Can anyone put any meat on that bone at all??

St Cleer.
There is a Wheal Tremar and a Tremar Copper Mine and a load of Mining Journal references 1851 to 1853.

I cannot find any reference after 1853 but my index database only goes up to 1860.

If you want images of any MJ reference just ask.

I have long suspected that an adit is probably a source of the stream in Tremar (west caradon? ). I have a mate who lives in Tremar and where he is building his shed has a load of what I would consider lode tip material....comby quartz, growan, speckled "****" and some chalcopyrite flakes in gossan. The engine was said to be only a couple of years old when sold in 1852/3 and purported to have done only a little work.
Could it be a 'mine for show' job for the London money market? It perhaps has the hallmarks such as a 'Caradon' based name, a new engine installed even though there is no record apparently of any significant workings and the mine only appears from Roy's records to show up for a couple of years.
Be nice to know where it stood though.
Thanks for all info.

Doug - If you would like to contact me off-line I can send you 3 pages of newspaper reports on Wheal Tremar Copper Mine that I have down-loaded from a Newspaper Site that I have access to. Or if anyone else would like a copy (word doc.) please contact me off-line.

The articles (brief look by me) include a number of meetings with accounts, brief description of working (adit - Stuey), court case - regarding the bubble company, and a sale list of materials etc, including the 40-inch cylinder steam engine.

All between 1851 to 1853.

Kindest regards Tin Miner
