I've heard that some planks over the pool at Ystrad Einon have been removed - sounds a bit odd, is someone looking after the place?

Thanks Smile

Thanks - to be honest, I wouldn't be sad to see a lock - it'd too nice to leave wide open...

The only problem with the locks last time is that people keept cuting them off.A combitation lock with the code given to the likes of WMS and WMPT would still give mine explorer's access and stop vandalism.

Yup, combination locks are the best option - really just to keep random vandals out...

Ben, James

I was in the adit at Ystrad Einion on March 21 and the planks were still there then, any further information will be gratefully received.

Ceredigion County Council's PLWM project is funding some interpretation boards at the mine and the RCHM (W) are carrying out a 3D survey of some parts of the mine and buildings.

I heard from someone who was there yesterday and said that the planks were gone - I've pointed him to this thread so he might add his own info. Gone, not collapsed, apparently.

I assume that this thread refers to the catwalk over the flooded stope.

This was fitted by me for the NAMHO 2002 field meet and although I have not yet had opportunity to visit the mine I can conform that any interference with my underground work provokes my extreme displeasure.

I inspect regularly all timber fitted underground and warn people to stay away from anything that I feel needs replacing, as I did at Frongoch.

They were in good enough nick last summer, holding my dainty sixteen or so stone without any noticable problems so they shouldn't have needed replacing I would have thought.

About 4 inches thick and treated with creosote. NAMHO organisers were happy with my work but there was also a handline at that time, not really necessary and since removed.
I also put an aluminium ladder in the engine shaft up the higher level, also removed.

The cat walk would have been good for years and years. Of course, until someone takes a look we dont definately know that it has been removed. It would have taken some effort as it was secured by cross pieces and 6 inch nails.

The planks have gone, I'm told - no sign of them.

I would like to know who is responsible for this and why it was done.

Unless whoever's responsible comes forward, I don't think there's much chance of getting an answer...

If there had been any health and safety concerns by the local authority I would have been approached, I rather think it is a group who took in on themselves to do this.

It is not really necessary to have a catwalk there; it was done for NAMHO so as to make it friendly for the less able.
I shall have to take a look and see if anything needs doing.
Yes RSJs and concrete does occur but it’s not acceptable.
Anything done has to be sympathetic to the mine. The waterwheel by the way is a scheduled ancient monument.

If the flooded understope is passable without doing anything, I shall leave alone.

I will bring it up at the next Ceredigion Mines Forum, and in the meantime make a few inquiries.

Good jugs on the south side make this winze passable without a catwalk (at least by the confident / more able) - tommorrow I'll try and upload a photo of the traverse being undertaken. I'm sure that the provision of a catwalk made this winze crossable by the less able / less confident during the NAHMO meet. Well done Roy for making it so sympathetic in appearance. No point in it having been removed as anyone who did not wish to use it could have still traversed the south wall in the old style. Maybe the simplest solution is to only temporarily install a catwalk the next time there is a meet at Ystrad Einion that may see less able / less confident venturing underground?

I have been thinking about this, of course I have yet to go and see but what if it was ripped up in order to attempt to build a climbing aid in the engine shaft to reach the level 15 feet up.

We all know some of types that go underground these days.

Here is a 1989 photo of the traverse on the south wall of the Deep Adit east drivage across the flooded winze, viewed from the east (i.e. looking from the Engine Shaft towards the waterwheel):

Use of the rails and oddments of timber was not really necessary but the model needed to remain stationary for around 45 seconds for the photo. The jugs are very visible.

Hmm, can't manage to upload image; have tried both these formats:

'img' in square brackets then 'http://www.aditnow.co.uk/photo/Personal-Album-4590-Image-50474/' then '/img' in square brackets

'img' in square brackets then 'http://www.aditnow.co.uk/personalalbum/personal-album-4590/' '/img' in square brackets

What am I doing incorrectly?

I doubt anyone who's done something naughty is going to own up to it.

The planks are probably in mine heaven, sipping cocktails with the Norpex door.
