It is worth noting, for anyone reading this thread, that Manod is still a working quarry (now known as cwt Y Bugail) and any access gained would be deemed as trespassing.
I visited the place in September 1983 when a one-off open day was organised, there was a gaping hole to daylight in a chamber with a crane, if i remember correctly. Could this be the one that you speak of?

From what I understand, when the chambers were abandoned in the early 1980s, the roofs were removed from the buildings and those in worst condition were partially demolished to make them safe.

As Barney says, Cwt-y-Bugail is a working quarry and as such should not be entered - particularly as the after-effects of blasting are likely to result in hazardous rock falls.

There's plenty of abandoned workings to have a look at in other parts of north Wales, including some where the owners are okay with people going in and also some that have been inspected for group access.

Have you been into any other mine in north Wales? If you've not, we'll probably have a couple of beginners' trips in the spring that you'd be welcome on Smile

My father's brother, Emrys E**** used to work there as an electritian on the air conditioning in the old days. He died aged 73 in 1975. In his retirement days he used to repair car radators, Grandfather clocks, radios etc etc. I will have to ask my cousin in what years he used to work there.

Belinda, feel free to have a look at the SRT training sessions thread, put yourself down if interested. It'll be nice if there's someone else for people to laugh at Big Grin and not just me.

Have a look at this website for some information of Manod in WW2 and in the 1960's.
