first time in a mine last night and im hooked
Posted: 17/08/2020 17:17:52 Reply | Quote so last night a friend took me for my first time underground in a mine and im hooked!! ive been into "extreme sports" all of my life but never had the opportunity to do anything of this sort, what a rush! anyway from what i could get out of my friend it seems that caving in the uk is quite "clicky" and there are a lot of politics involved with who can go where and what not which also makes finding a group to join virtually impossible even if you know someone in the group!(from what im told) basically what im getting at is id like to find a group i could join as i do not really want to be going down into these places alone as ive read thats a big No No.....well at least until you're fully versed in caving.if you fancy helping a new comer get into the sport my details are below i live in north wales my instagram;scott_ditchburn or email me from here IP: 109.155.111.32 |

Posted: 17/08/2020 19:06:45 Reply | Quote So, what you've been told is, basically, a load of bullocks. But spelled a bit differently Aditnow groups go out on a weekly basis in more 'normal' times, some trips require technical skills, others are 'walk in your wellies' territory - plenty of Aditnow members in North Wales, so local too. As a member of the site, you'd be welcomed with open arms (metaphorically speaking) on those trips. About the only thing you NEED to do is join 'properly' to get insurance - the link is under the 'Information and Resources' tab, marked up as 'Join the ANMHS'. Other insurance providers are, of course, available. A lot of groups, Cave Access Ltd (google them), for example, require insurance in place. Another local group is UCET. A friendly approachable mob who seem to frequent mines close to pubs. You will find people reluctant to discuss 'dodgy' sites with you - there is a level of trust that needs to be built up. There are sites where, if it became widely known that they were being accessed, the JCBs and concrete would be brought in to block any access. By 'dodgy' sites, it can be sites that are on land where the owners don't welcome mine exploration - for a number of possible reasons. Some might think they are liable if someone gets killed or injured. Others might just have a 'get off my land' attitude. Some may have had people breaking fences, litter, etc left behind. Other sensitive sites might include coal. If the Coal Authority become aware of ANY access into an old coal mine, they block it. Old coal mines are a very quick way to get very dead. It's easier to judge a club by getting to know people in person, than to take a punt based on a recommendation from someone you have only met online. IP: 91.125.14.131 |

Posted: 17/08/2020 22:22:05 Reply | Quote Welcome, it is indeed a great pastime. I'm not entirely sure the phrase 'extreme sport' is a great fit - although I suppose standing around in the darkness in chest deep water muttering into your beard about shotholes with a group of folk you met in a layby a few hours earlier standing semi naked in driving hail might be viewed as such....... Posted: 18/08/2020 08:34:01 Reply | Quote I couldn't get enough of it when I first started. Worked underground at an NCB colliery during the day (mostly) shift and then seeking out abandoned mines in the evening. Things were more relaxed back then, the coal board seemed to take around 5-6 years between closing a pit to actually landscaping it, so there were plenty of options. What I didn't know was that I wasn't the only one doing it, indeed, I found the existence of NMRS (NMCRS?) from an item in "Coal News". I duly joined the society...... It was a great time, everything went well, then I got a girlfriend ![]() -- Regards, John... Huddersfield, best value for money in the country, spend a day there & it'll feel like a week........ I was only doing about 30 to 40 approaching Alston and a farmer was on the verge on a quad bike. Suddenly without warning or looking he turned right into the road right in front of me. I had to jam my brakes on and it was a very near thing. He never even glanced in my direction. Must have been stone deaf or something. Brain dead as well from his actions. -- '' as rare as a Cwmystwyth padlock'' IP: 92.10.79.73 |
