Tremar Mine
Posted: 02/03/2019 21:34:31 Reply | Quote A 40in Pumping engine was purchaste at auction in November 1853 by The Thames and Severn Canal for the Thames head Pumping Station, this engine was built by Thomas & Co Charlstown Foundry for Tremar Mine. Can any one pinpoint the location of this mine. The mine was only in existence for two years,so the engine was in good condition. Thanks Scoggan. IP: 86.151.93.65 |

The ground will average two feet and a half wide, composed of spar and peach, with some good stones of copper ore. We have also commenced sinking our engine shaft from the surface, which we intend to sink with all possible speed. I would therefore recommend that an engine house be erected immediately, and an engine sought after which with all speed: the propriety of our doing so would appear from the number of lodes this sett contains, and also their promising appearances; and as this sett has not been taken up for anything like the market, but to be properly worked, I think the sooner the Mine can be effectually tried the better, hoping in so doing every adventurer will be well rewarded for their outlay The Cornish Telegraph - Friday 30th May 1851. The Tremar Copper Mine - In the Exchequer Court, on Wednesday, a trial was heard respecting some hare dealings in this mine - Gurney v. Jury. Plaintiff sought to recover £20 for money paid, had, and received, and on an account; and stated he was a solicitor. In the early part of 1851, the alluring statements of a prospectus of this concern induced him to purchase 20 shares, and to make a payment of £1 each to the defendant - the company being divided into 1024 shares. It turned out, however, that a portion thereof was allotted to the South Caradon Mining Company, and a further allotment to defendant - upon none of which had any deposit being paid; all which defendant knew, he being the promoter of the scheme. Upon subsequent inquiry, plaintiff ascertained that the managing agent was grantee of the sett, and had received 424 shares, the defendant (Jury) 600 free - out of which number came the 20 purchased by plaintiff, the available capital for working the mine being obtained by means of 5s. a call upon the shareholders. The prospectus, therefore, was a false representation sent forth to the public, which distinctly stated there were no "free shares" issued. Defendant was purser. Mr. Baron Martin left the case to the jury, who returned a verdict for the amount claimed, giving their opinion there was no imputation upon the defendant. Mr. Baron Martin, fully concurring in that remark, a verdict was given for plaintiff - Damages £20. Royal Cornwall Gazette - Friday 28th November 1851.
