Some years ago you could freely read newspapers from all over the world, now you regularly get calls to pay to even look at the site or this message about you being to look because in the EU. -- |

Posted: 28/08/2018 14:02:16 Reply | Quote Is GDPR anything to do with real data protection? As far as I can see, most of use have just received lots of requests to fill in forms and either scan or post them. As well as other bureaucracy, this has been as bad as the SPAM which seems to be completely unaffected and still pouring in. It is a typical bureaucrat's idea of a solution i.e. lots more forms. -- |

Posted: 28/08/2018 15:22:56 Reply | Quote At the risk of infecting AditNow with 'politics', the GDPR is actually a reasonably well thought out, albeit amazingly long-winded, piece of legislation. The PITA has been a million and one companies' last minute / kneejerk reaction to it. The deadline for compliance was IIRC 25th May this year, yet despite the two year introductory period most companies sent their "hey, let's stay in touch" emails out the day before. Many of those didn't need sending. Suppliers were contacting their customers to request permission to send them invoices (covered by legitimate business interest); and a well run email marketing list would store the details of when people had opted in. Anecdotally I recall receiving requests to re-subscribe to lists I distinctly remember subscribing to. And the flip side; I opted out of things I had no interest in continuing to receive, hadn't received anything for years from, and then started receiving emails again :/ For companies who didn't know where they had got their data from; they had to go out to get permission, or scrap their lists and start over. GDPR seems to reflect the growing digitalisation of everything; and the fact that more and more sensitive information is stored, biometrics etc.; and of course marketing - and specifically email and phone/sms marketing which seemed to be the focus of attention - is actually only a small part of it. A - non-marketing - example off the top of my head; let's say you did a blood test and got your results via a secure web page. You'd probably want to know where that information was held, who had access to it, and who (and where) it could be transferred to. You'd also certainly want to know it wouldn't be sold. Unfortunately it does absolutely chuff all about the never-ending tide of spam that comes in from outside of the EU. -- my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by IP: 81.148.206.181 Edited: 28/08/2018 15:32:27 by SimonRL |

Posted: 28/08/2018 17:55:47 Reply | Quote As a small addition to what Simon has said I have noticed that several firms have used the 'permissions' exercise as a way of collecting more info than they previously did. Also and more disturbingly I have recieved 2 examples of what I consider to be very underhand attempts to get data. Previously both only required your email address for registration, now both have sent a multipage form requesting on page 1 your name (required) and address (optional), then on a later page postcode (required) and house number (required). For the majority postcode plus house number IS YOUR ADDRESS. -- |
