Hi - I am looking for any information about mine workings (iron or coal) in the above locations. I am particularly interested in the bell-pit in the Cringles area of Oakenshaw. Can anybody help? IP: 86.171.1.26

The whole area was a mass of mines and tramways providing coal and ironstone to the ironworks at Low Moor and Bowling.

If it's a particular bell pit you're interested in then it's likely to pre-date most record keeping. There might be leases in local archives.

If you search for the Low Moor Iron Company then there are some threads on this site. And for a good read about the whole area then this is a cracker:

There are a host of mining remains to see still, spoil heaps, inclines, shafts and so on. A walk from Cringle up the length of Cliff Hollin Lane shows much still extant.

Here's an excerpt from my map of the area showing shafts, named pits and tramways/railways - tell me exactly the area you're looking for, and I'll post a larger view of it.

Cheers

Excellent stuff!!

I wish I had had that when I began researching the Low Moor area for my map 10 years ago (the map currently covers the area from around Shipley in the north to Penistone in the south, Wakefield to the east and Halifax in the west).

Cheers

Thank you that is really helpful. I hadn't thought of looking at leases and land documents. IP: 86.171.118.253
