Hi Jomi

Full underground member probably isn't very clear... it relates to the insurance, the BCA offers two levels; caving (i.e. mine exploring underground in our context) and non-caving (i.e. insured for surface activities).

We're not intending to offer a non-caving / surface mine activity category unless there is significant demand. This is in part due to not wanting this association to tread on the toes of established clubs. However what the 'full underground member' gives you is the underground BCA insurance that many club controlled mines require for access.

Hope that helps.

Simon except that you have set this up for those who are not and do not want to join clubs to that that extent what is wrong with offering surface only membership. Land owners are just as twitchy re surface remains of which many on this site will want to access in order to photograph / record - the insurance can help when negotiating with farmers and the like I know.

If there is a demand for the above-ground only insurance, then this will be offered!

Not a bad idea..... many a time this subject comes up with landowners on my numerous walks..... and this could be the difference between getting on site or not.... particularly where the site is unstable etc Thumb Up

As Vanoord says, if there's demand for this we'll offer it.

We founded this society with genuine good intentions. To help people gain legitimate access to locations that require insurance and to help us arrange visits to those many, varied and interesting locations.

Response has varied from that it is in competition with existing clubs to it not being a complete enough offering.

At some point I'll probably compile all the questions in this thread into a FAQ.

You can count me in. You could also possibly get people to give a talk about different mining/quarrying subjects. Perhaps something similar to 'forwm Tanybwlch' at different locations. I am sure there would be some interest.

Is that not the kind of thing already provided by established clubs?

It probably is but as we a lot people sit outside of clubs and this is an opportunity for new things to happen. Clubs of course do offer talks etc but you have to join I guess adit now is justy a new form of club

There are two historic societies in the village where I live. In 17 years i have been once. There are more in the town about 3 miles on. Also there is the Forum Tanybwlch which has been going for about 30 odd years. I try to go when i can. Originaly they got an ex miner, tracklayer etc etc that worked or was working at a slate or other mine/quarry to have a general chat about their experience, and it was recorded on tape and kept safely.
I am sure many of us would be interested in for example Jagman giving a talk about his experience over the years of mine exploration. Or someone talking about some cave network in Yorkshire etc. etc. I don't know how it would work as we are scatterd all over the country. Just an idea that came to mind.

Just a quick note to those that have joined in the past week or so. The BCA administrator has been away for a week so hopefully the membership cards will be processed next week.

Will PM you all as soon as I hear.

Technically you're insured from the date of the payment (as I understand it) but it's nice to have the card in your hand Wink

On the question of "surface insurance" it might be found that if a household contents policy (or similar) is held, that it includes a section that covers personal liability which might well cover these circumstances. Read the small print if you are insured, you may be pleasantly suprised! IP: 92.8.17.72

I would be very suprised if a household policy includes the land owners indeminty bit, which is the crucial point as far as the site owner is concerned, not any visitors personal liabilty insurance.
As far as I know, the BCA policy is pretty unique in providing this.

MrC, you are correct, mea culpa.
It is a commercial/business policy that I have that covers these aspects. The BCA policy at £6 appears a snip compared with mine!!

All current ANMHS members have just been sent an email to remind that's it's now time to renew membership to get BCA insurance cover for 2009... actually I should have sorted this out just before the new year so sorry it's a little bit late.

I'm posting this here incase I've not got up to date emails for everybody and anyone misses an email reminder.

Renew online here if required: [web link] if no longer required then please just drop me an email or PM so I can take you off the list.

Thanks everybody who has renewed. First batch of payments to the BCA will go off on Monday so membership cards will be back very shortly after.

If anybody else (new or renew) wants the insurance and to be in the first batch could you please renew by Sunday night? Thanks Flowers
