We live at Mylor in Cornwall and we have an adit on our land. Because nothing showed up on the survey when we bought the property I imagined the adit was something and nothing when we found it. For the first time, the other day, I paddled up the stream to take a look and was surprised to see the tunnel went back a long way into the hillside. Of course it may go back no further than my torch beam could reach. I'm curious to know what's there but there's no way I'm going into it. Is there a local group that has the equipment and looks at this sort of thing and wouldn't be too hacked off if not much came of it? Thanks.

Thank you. If some of them are nearby they might not mind dropping in when passing by. Don't want to waste anyone's time. IP: 86.181.103.149

Some short tunnels were driven as ice houses and nothing to do with mining, just thought I should mention this.
Generally, the amount of spoil at the entrance usually indicates the extent of the work, but if adjacent to a stream, a lot of stuff would be washed away over the years.

Well, if I was local, I wouldn't consider it a waste of my time. If others here are like me, an invitation to look in a hole is rarely turned down! I am sure someone will take a look or let you know what it is. Good luck. IP: 31.55.8.1

Did you notice if there was any water coming out and if so how much?

Did you notice any air movement? Like a cool breeze coming out?

I can't imagine anyone who might be interested would view it as a waste of time if it didn't lead anywhere.
Because, quite often, people here are trying to find where odd holes in the ground might be located - or are supposed to be located. To have the hole pointed out is a bonus !

If it was my area, I'd be straight in, so I doubt you'll struggle to get any takers. By the weekend you may have a 'Glastonbury queue' of battered Land Rovers, with strange, bearded drivers, materialising from all directions... IP: 81.174.241.13

Is the adit anywhere near any of the numerous old quarries along the creek? IP: 109.145.191.124

It's actually facing Devoran but a good half mile back from the creek.

It's Cornwall, they might be battered camper vans!

Thank you, that's reassuring. Don't want to mislead anyone but it's an interesting site and probably all the clues are there for some detective work.

It has a stream that's trickling at the moment because of the dry spell but it flows a bit more in winter. I didn't notice a cool breeze but then I was a bit surprised how far back it went. I was expecting some sort of well being the origin of the water and not a tunnel.

Thanks for the response. We're certainly different. I've looked at this hole from afar for 4 years and, until the other day, felt no compulsion to investigate, and even then it was mild curiosity and not compulsion. Leave holes to the experts is my mantra! :-)

Maybe. I just don't know. It's rather low for a tunnel designed to be accessed although it could have silted up over the years. There is a stream but not powerful enough to wash away very much debris. There are spoil mounds, but I would have said not enough to create the tunnel that I saw.

Pure speculation based on the shaft circled in red and a guess on the adit position circled in blue it could be a drainage adit? Please advise if the blue circle is anywhere near the adit position.

I have looked at your photo and it is certainly not an ice house much too small, some drainage levels certainly are that small.

A clue would be to extrapolate its course above ground and see whats there, although you might have to cover some distance. I appreciate that you dont want to put the location on a public forum, but drawing a straight line corresponding to its direction on a large scale map, particularly and old map, could be useful.

Drainage adit or old water course suggests itself. Exploration I think wise to take a gas meter, I agree, a job for someone who understands these things.

Wheres Stu?

EDITED because postings interleaved
Morlock could be on the money, but warning about gas or bad air relevant, my feeling just by looking at it.

Close but not in the circle. Good speculation.
