Not good.

Seems to me there is no end to this, you either block the place up completely, or leave it to the "elements" so to speak, and let nature take its course, people will get bored.

What a shame. Thumb Down

It seems strange to me that the "owners" Avon Wildlife
Ignore everything that is happening there. Cursing

When it all goes pear shaped and someone is injured or dies they (Avon Wildlife) will be held responsible for their inaction.
I foresee prosecutions.

No matter what you think of what is going on, the character assassination and persecution of an individual is totally unacceptable, cowardly, and is NOT a game. Sadly, if this does end in tragedy, those responsible will probably have little remorse and probably never understand what they did. Stand up to bullies, stand alongside the bullied. Such behaviour is becoming more prevalent as those with hate in their hearts become more and more emboldened by the climate they see around them. Sad

This is not going to end well.

When the crap hits the fan, which it will, the Mines Inspectorate, with their new found zeal, will descend like a ton of bricks and the fallout will have extremely serious implications for recreational mine exploration.

Well said Peter.

This is a terribly sad situation, I had the pleasure of being shown around Browns a couple of years ago (by 'the caretaker') and to me over the 2 or 3 hours we spent together he seemed perfectly sane, friendly and possessed of a genuine love for the quarry. We have remained friends since although I have not met him again in person.

Certainly a degree of eccentricity may be involved in adopting a specific quarry to clean up however I suspect degrees of eccentricity are not lacking in our circles!

As far as I can tell objections against are based mainly on a perceived attitude of 'ownership' and disagreement over conservation philosophy. For this to have escalated to the sort of response pictured above is outrageous in the extreme.

Whilst I understand the desire that this would all just 'go away' because of the damage it could do to us all should it come to some sort of head, it doesn't show any signs of doing so and has been going on for many years already. I do find it hard to understand the position taken by some that there is little to choose between the protagonists. I would take someone cleaning up, perhaps too much for some tastes, over those spreading excrement and painting everything in sight any day of the week.

It is pleasing to see that more and more people are showing support towards Brian. I know there are a lot of folk who appreciate the effort he puts into making FDQ an enjoyable trip for any explorer. The more folk show their support the more the yobs will see how many they are upsetting and maybe they will start to realise that it isn't just Brian that is affected by the damage and vandalism. Once the wider community unites against these criminals, then and only then, might we get a lull in damage caused. We need unity in our community, not division.

It is only when a mosquito lands on your testicles that you realise, there is always a way to solve problems without using violence!!

This will end in something nasty happening.

I'm the last person in the world calling for more locks/gates/plugs normally. However, in this case, sealing it up for a generation would be a good idea.

I'm aware of another set of "idiocy tennis" locally and both sides have supporters and the various "acts" have got to the point where we've had the human excrement involved and now they're onto the fiddling with rigging.

In the case of Browns. I'm surprised that the authorities have not put an end to this stupidity already. It's a time for the headmaster to say "I'm not interested in your story, everyone is banned from the slide" - and then taking it to bits with a JCB.

WTF is wrong with you? And others that think this way too. Is it too much effort to work things out or to unite against the minority? Always go for the close it option so everyone loses out. Well we know that aint gonna happen any time soon. If you dont like what is happening and can not be arsed to give constructive debate then you do not have to read the posts even worse comment on them. We have lost access to too many places as it is. Lets have positive ideas then things may get resolved.

So what do we do?

Gather up the mine explorer militia? Post armed guards at all entrances. Deploy the minefields. 24 hour watch!

There is no easy solution to this.

There are already several thousand posts on ukcaving about this, mostly descending into name-calling and achieving nothing. Since this thread is inevitably going the same way, please can it be stopped.

I only vaguely know of Brian from having purchased some of his SM32 kits many years ago, as well as purchasing some of his delightful booklets about industrial narrow gauge railway systems.

As I see it, bringing someones mental health (be it true or otherwise) into a thread (UKC) is just bullying. In fact,it seems a large gang are intent on bullying one man.

OK, so Brian maybe a little bit eccentric, and possibly does send a little bit too much time down there, but so what? He obviously gets enjoyment from doing all he does there. He is not doing anyone any harm, in fact I would say he is doing a fair amount of good. The same cannot be said for a bunch of c***Ts (by their own admission) who go around bullying one person and spraying vast amounts of paint over a mine site, to say nothing of destroying historic graffiti, artifacts, etc, etc.

It's the appalling treatment of a fellow Mine Explorer that outrages me far more than the vandalism, which is bad enough in itself. I think, with one or two exceptions, the contributions here reflect this - the same cannot always be said of UKC where it always seems to be about keeping places open/shutting them up/worrying about ownership etc. At the end of the day, well-meaning mine explorers should support each other, and set aside personal differences, when we see hatred and victimisation.

Having been told a bit more information it really seems the best course of action would be for Brian to just take a step back for the time being. I know many will see that as "giving up" and letting the bullies win, but when they no longer get a rise anymore this will end fairly sharpish and work can be slowly done to rectify any damage and bring it back to how it used to look, no more building of walls and being a super clean swept mine.

I don't think anyone here is trying to be unsupportive, its just a case of what can be feasibly done? Its a long drawn out saga now which doesn't help.

I do appologise if some of my previous posts come across as uncaring, that was not my intention. This is just a frustrating issue at this point with no easy way on.
