Hello there, I have visited Blaenavon's Big Pit a number of times and it is fascinating. One thing I struggle to get my hear around is just how far the tunnels go.

I wondered if anyone had any maps which plot the different tunnels that have been created during the time the mine was active to get a better idea of just how big the tunnel network is.

Also, does anyone know how far the tunnel network went in miles?

There should be full plans at the Colliery,

I have a plan of the Johnson private mine to the South of Big Pit,it shows the Johnson take skirting the Big Pit Elled/2ft 9in workings, with old workings in the 4ft seam below from an older Colliery, not Big Pit.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the plan for Johnson's mine please? I live within Blaenavon and have always been fascinated by the mines in the surrounding area. IP: 83.104.176.109

Blaenavon is indeed very interesting, and not only for the old mines in the Upper Carboniferous. I spent nine hours near there yesterday hauling limestone up a shaft as part of a research project.

I would like to know what happens at depth below (for instance) Upper and Lower Hill St and Ton-Mawr St. If you have not already looked at them you might find the borehole logs available on the BGS site interesting, although most of those in the town are shallow. Here is an interesting one with a section of Blaenavon looking like a Swiss Cheese:
