After what seems like years of work to widen the A1 western Bypass around Gateshead it is closed by a "sinkhole"
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/gateshead-sinkhole-what-know-far-11526676
It could well be Ravensworth Park drift that has fallen in, it is in the right place, but this area is a honeycomb of old and not so old coal mines. Ravensworth Park was a relatively late starter, opened in 1936, closed 1968.
This route has been well investigated, if you look at the boreholes on the BGS site, but they missed this one. There is also plenty of coal left, saw a nice 3ft seam exposed in the roadworks a few months ago.
I am just pleased that I am heading south for work in the morning!

I was on the A1 yesterday lunchtime driving south. I have never seen rain like it, and there was a foot of water under the rail bridge at Dunston, just off the A1. Thank goodness for the Landy!

Its a pity that the numpties doing 60 thru the roadworks in their BMWs and Audis didn't drive their worthless sphincters straight into that hole.

Apparently the Highways Authority is looking into it Bored

That's a bit harsh Mark, I drive my Audi "responsibly(ish)", except on the 3-lane uphill bits on the Durham Motorway (as we older folk still call it), but that's just because it's fun and it's quite entertaining watching the daft brains who can't work out what the lane ending signs might mean.

Based on a, dubiously valid, sample they seem to be 50% Ford/Vauxhall loonies and 50% Audi/BMW idiots.

I don't think it was you, Jim Flowers but I was quite specific in my Rant there Smartass

Statistically though, seems almost every time some eejit wants my place on the road, its a black BMW or Audi. At least I think it is, cant always see the badge cos they're that close!

Why anyone would want to go knock-for-knock with a 13 year old Freelander that's more mud and ironstone than car is quite beyond me Laugh

I have a similar issues.

Why anyone would want to argue with someone in a company van is beyond me? It's blatantly obvious it's not mine and I'm not going to pay for any damage or insurance etc. So don't try and nick my space on the road because I don't tend to move out of the way.... Cursing

Ha!,

That explains it mine's yellowInnocent, some fools might say gold, and it is 18 years old so doesn't like excessive thraping.

By the by my summer work slavery will be done in the next few weeks so I'll keep an eye on the Rampgill roof fall thread and aim to get over to help/hinder (delete as evidence emerges) and drive like a loon around Nenthead, if there are any roadworks to abuseLaugh

You're clearly well out of the demograph, then Jim!

Tends to be newer, over-aspirational easy-payment, no-ownership-option, now-we-own-your-soul types.

New Beemer on the driveway, b????r-all in t'fridge.

I'm still hard at work on my algorithm to predict the speed of thread spread, A1 Gateshead sinkhole - Audi drivers - Cotswolds. Not necessarily useful, but always charming. IP: 87.114.12.92 Edited: 26/06/2016 17:04:58 by Jim MacPherson

Usually Audi/BMW and Range Rovers at around 8am, causing the yoyo effect when they run out of road as they didn't know what the signs meant.
PS the A1 is now closed till Wednesday, they have been grouting for months, except for that bit

Whilst I would concede that Landy doors are fitted to a fairly loose tolerance this is actually a cunning design feature to allow the water which leaks through the roof to drain out.

Bringing the topic slightly closer to the A1 but then veering off wildly.
I find that the scourge of the North East minor road is the Range Rover, obviously driven by those who have graduated from the BMW, with no concept as to the width of their vehicle.
Much more scary than the boy racers in their Clios et al - a Range Rover is much bigger and heavier!

I saw a new(ish) mine sink hole the other day...

Nick, it is because they do not want to get their Range Rover dirty, or even touched by the grass at the roadside. That is why they stay in the middle of the road and expect the rest of us to drive on the verge IP: 85.211.117.100
