Driving on the A55 expressway, I've always thought there was some sort of small quarry at this location. it appears recently that the trees have been pruned back to reveal rather than a mine, what looks to be a bricked up adit with a metal grille in it.
Having a look at the NLS web site, it's marked as 'Cave' on the 1911 Map http://maps.nls.uk/view/102350221

If this is the adit I think it is ...

It is by the underpass that goes under the A55 and very close to a house and bus top.

Only the top half of the adit remains (bricked up) with a grill that is the size of a window (and locked?)

I was made aware of it by someone around 18months ago (possibly longer) (forgot his name, really sorry). He told me that it was a long passage leading to a "lake". I was intrigued, especially by the reference to a "lake" so I went to visit it.

I (wrongly) assumed it was "open" (since he described the innards) and found it was gated and locked.

Sadly, that was the end of my interest. I didn't think it would be substantial due to no evidence of workings there or nearby and no historical references (I assume it was a trial). I abandoned the idea of a "lake" and preferred to believe the gate was OTT H&S.

However, since I never went in ... I don't know Blink

I looked in there sometime around 1961/2 ... there was no gate then.

From what I recall there was a short level to a branch off to the left. A short distance further on both branches had chest-high brick walls across them impounding water. In one branch (possibly the left) it looked as if the floor sloped away below the water.

So, I would guess it was a trial or possibly a small working that later had been used as a water supply.

Interestingly, older OS maps on the NLS website has the site marked as a Well, so reservoir sounds likely. Wonder what for though? Maybe a water tank for the railway maybe, or the Gas Works to the west (1888 map), I suppose they'd have been passing steam over hot coke to produce water gas back then. IP: 217.9.203.195

There was nothing on the railway in that vicinity as far as I am aware. (There were water troughs at Pabo west of Mochdre at one time, but I think they got moved to Aber.)

... the Gas Works to the west (1888 map), I suppose they'd have been passing steam over hot coke to produce water gas back then.
Could be for the gas works, but alternatively I wonder if it might have been the water supply for the isolation hospital at the end of Dinerth Road or, just possibly, the 'tank' shown adjacent to cemetery on the map Bertie refers to above. (This would be below the level of the railway line at that point so it would be unlikely to be connected with the railway.)

I was lucky enough to get on a trip round the gas works when they were working. They were making 'town gas' (coal gas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_gas) by heating coal in the absence of air to produce coal gas and coke. (Steam over hot coke generates 'water gas' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_gas)

A (coal) gasworks would require a water supply for the 'scrubber' section. IP: 31.53.193.197

Blimey, there's a lot to this gas lark! Coal gas, Water gas, Town Gas, Producer gas, I would guess that water gas would be for industrial rather than domestic purposes due to high CO content. Even town gas was 10% CO, which is why prior to North Sea gas you might pop your head into an oven if things weren't going too well.

So this gas works, coal coming in by rail, water possibly from the adit; what type of gas would they produce, and who would be the consumers?

Colwyn Bay Gas Works was, I believe, fairly typical of small town gasworks. The road entrance to the site was at the bottom of the road down from Conway Road just before it turned under the railway bridge into Dinerth Road.

Coal was delivered by rail to the gas works siding and there were two tipplers (one facing each way) for end-door coal wagons. I think there might have been four or six retorts and two gasholders. I think the coke may have been taken away by lorry to be sold by local coal merchants.

The works supplied gas to the borough of Colwyn Bay (Colwyn Bay, Old Colwyn, Rhos on Sea and Mochdre). I think it operated until the late 1960s when UK gas systems were converted over the period from 1967 to 1977 to North Sea gas.

Knowing WW (and I do, as I used to work for them) you've got 2 chances. Fat, and slim.

Had no time to walk to it today, but went past on the bus, so couldn't see if there was a lock or not...but the gap between the two top bars looked doable, 12 - 14 ins ?

Now that it's come to light again with the tree chopping, they'll probably fix it LaughLaughLaugh
