Can we have a resolution for captions or information on all pictures please!
Also if possible for people to go back through their postings and add information.

For example I was looking through the Cwmorthin album, many pictures are fine, but there are a lot of "a bridge" or "a chamber" Which bridge? which chamber?
This would make all the difference when looking through albums.

Basically I agree it helps hugely the more information is put up the better. Trouble is my dad knew where he was when he took them 20 - 40 years ago, with many of them I have little or no idea, even the annotated ones say little more than things like Smallcleugh with no date, but as I upload them I'll try to be as precise as I can. Even the fabled Harry Parker didn't always give any clear clues and he was a professional snapper.

So yes I agree with Rufenig especially in the expectation AditNow will still be here 20 - 40 years on.

A date (where known) I believe is a pretty essential piece of info. Given that AN is probably the largest historic archive on the net, being able to date an image will be of great benefit to researchers/explorers in the future. Flowers

I totally agree. We have over 1000 photos of Smallcleugh mine, on AN.
I think I know this mine fairly well, since I have been going in it for over 50 years!
Most of the photos, have little information on them, and even I could not be totally sure where some of these photographs have been taken.

To my mind this begs the question...

What is better? Photos without captions? Or no photos?

I mean that as a discussion topic, not as a sweeping statement to suggest that if detailed captions were mandatory that photo uploads would stop.

Sites like AN likely fit the 80/20 rule. 80% of the content coming from 20% of the members. And I for one am hugely grateful to everybody who has taken their time to submit photos, documents and to contribute to forum topics over the past 10 years. But it is also important to make people who want to use the site as a resource but cannot contribute welcome.

In a perfect world all photos would all be fully captioned and dated, but it's not a perfect world, and at least they are all in albums tagged to the mine/quarry in question.

See your point Simon, maybe the OP could have been worded better, maybe 'Encouraged whenever possible' would read better--

Although the date of upload is displayed, it would be useful if there was a field to record the date a photo was taken (perhaps defaulting to the EXIF date if available).

I think a nice resolution for 2016 would be get to some of the sites with no pictures posted.

Amazingly after 10 years there are still only 3989 out of 14709 with any content !

Even if a lot of them are now under housing estates, an old OS map snippet of the location or something could be added to the Archive section ?

I do have photos of some sites that are listed and currently empty, but posting them may have consequences that could be detrimental to a site's survival - at the moment. It's very frustrating, but I'd rather some places stayed secret and open, rather than known and blocked.

As to adding info, I always try and type just enough, without boring myself or the readers! But I'll always put something. If nothing else, it does force one to think more about duplication of images - 1 great shot with plenty of info is far better than 5 slightly different shots with no info.

Well this has got people talking about the subject, which is good.
I agree with Simon, I would rather see photographs with no captions than no pictures at all. Think of all the places that are gone and we wish we had pictures. (if only we had a time machine!)
The comment by pwhole is valid, but hopefully does not apply to many sites.

One more small nag, "be selective" we probably do not need to see 10 variations of exposure with the same view.Devil

Those who like doing historical research might like to look through the mine entries for sites with no historical notes, and do a bit of research, if only to add one or two snippets. From small seeds like this, others might go on to add more.

I have shedloads of prints which I snapped in the 1980's and 1990's around Teesdale, many of which I neglected to annotate and time has erased the details from my memory.

Agree, a picture without a caption is better than no picture at all, but even a few small details will pin down the exact location for posterity.

We probably already have the technology (if not the patience!) to create a virtual 3D plan of a mine, and to insert digital images in their correct locations and orientations within that plan. Much easier if a photo of, say, arching is given an approximate location, eg 'Low Skears Mine, D Vein, between Rise 3/4, looking NW' instead of just "Skears"

It also helps bring the location to life for those who are not familiar with the mine itself.

Many folks look on here daily, hopefully on somebody else's time Wink so it would be useful to review your own images and provide captioning where appropriate. Doesn't need to be War and Peace, just a few explanatory words.

And I'll go up in the loft and drag out a few prints for upload.

There is a provisional plan to do this with the Peak-Speedwell system in Castleton, not least as it supports two showcaves, neither of which really provide enough accurate info for visitors - or underground explorers. Not their fault especially, just an illustration of the difficulties in translating the underground world into a nifty five-minute presentation, especially when it's an 'unfriendly' underground system, at least to the general public. But with help from underground explorers doing the majority of the fieldwork, it's possible.

Dave Nixon has been compiling a 'master' 3D line-survey model in Survex for a good while now, and as stations are well-known, explorers are able to feed in new sections as they're completed - we added a new passage just last week. This can ultimately help generate a true 3D model that could easily have interactive elements added to it at significant node points. It's just time (and employment!) that's the issue, as always...

Being guilty of this in the past and possibly posting too many photos.

I do like the changes made to the bulk upload. It now encourages a title (as minimum?) and a description for photos uploaded in bulk. This also now make me think about which photos to post. I think sometimes the title can be enough of a description.

Most photos are taken nowadays using a digital camera which captures a date in the exif and some even capture the location (probably not u/g tho!!). However, I am not sure how copying/editing photos etc affect the exif data.

One thing (which isn't done much on here) is when folks post photos without detail or incorrect detail, the best approach is for someone of know to pm them NICELY. and not put it in the forum for folks to start hammering at people.

However, 2015 was a slow year for me and not much exploring. Hopefully 2016 will be a better year.

pwhole: Nice one, Survex looks like a damn powerful tool; I dreamed about something like this in the Stone age, when we still used Telex machines and faxes!! Roll Eyes

LeeW: I doubt the thread is intended to be haranguing; if the image title alone conveys sufficient information, job done. But, a little bit of housekeeping now might pay dividends in the future.
