R.A.Needham “Eimco Rail-mounted Rocker Shovels”, Industrial Railway Record no.222, September 2015, pp.410-424, included a list of known surviving rocker shovels in the UK, and a list of known mining users in the UK. If anyone can extend these lists, the author of the article may be interested in information. I do not have his contact details but information could be sent to the Industrial Railway Society via their website.

Known UK survivors: Geevor Tin Mine, Cornwall 3 x 12B; Moselely Tramway Cornwall: 2 x 21; Apedale Heritage Centre, Staffs 1 x 21, 1 x 40H; Threkeld, Cumbria 1 x 12B; Nenthead, Cumbria 1 x 12B; National Coal Mining Museum England, Caphouse Colliery, West Yorks 3 x 21 (1 working); Shropshire Mines Trust 1 x 12B (working); Dolaucothi Gold Mine, Carms 1 x 12B; Rogerley Mine, Durham 2 x 12B (1 working); Lea Bailey Gold Mine, Glos 1 x 12B (ex-Clearwell Caves; working); Bon le Marchant, Devon 1 x 12B (used for contract work); also 1 x 24 in private ownership, last recorded in Wiltshire; also 1 x Atlas Copco shovel from Morwelham, Devon, possibly previously used on the Ffestiniog Railway deviation tunnel, current location unknown.

Known UK mining users: South Crofty, Cornwall – over forty; Wheal Jane, Cornwall; Geevor, Cornwall - three on site when mine closed; Dolcoath, Cornwall – one from South Crofty; Ayle Colliery, Cumbria ; Carrock Tungsten Mine, Cumbria ; Honister Slate Mine, Cumbria ; Frazers Hush Mine, Durham; Rogerley Mine, Durham; Long Rake Spar Mine, Derbyshire; Glebe Mines, Derbyshire - seventeen in 1984; Sallet Hole Mine, Derbyshire; Great Rock Mine, Devon; Milwr Tunnel, Clwyd – “a number” plus one sold to Dolaucothi on closure; Parc Mine, Gwynedd “several reported left underground on closure”; Gwynfynydd Gold Mine, Gwynedd; Haywood level, Forest of Dean; North Skelton Ironstone Mine, North Yorks; Irthlingborough Ironstone Mine, Northants – ten; Mainsforth Colliery, Ferryhill, Durham; Cortonwood Colliery, South Yorks; Cadeby Colliery, South Yorks; Dinnington Colliery, South Yorks. In the text the notes that they were also used at Rossington Main Colliery, South Yorks; and Prince of Wales Colliery (county not stated).

Bob Le Marchant had two muckers, an 18" gauge 12 B and a 2'0" gauge Atlas. The Atlas was an interesting machine in that it turned out to be a prototype.

Although Bob was one of the Ffestiniog tunnelers his Atlas wasn't used in the driving of the New Moelwyn Tunnel on the FR, he acquired it for the development work in the George & Charlotte at Morwellham.

There was a stuffed and mounted Eimco in Redruth, I am fairly sure that this has migrated (along with a loco) to Levant.

Holmans Test Mine (Troon) has 4 working, two Eimco 12's, a Copco and the last working 824 trackless in the UK, currently parked up underground but running when necessary

(click image to open full size image in new window)

Crofty had two I think when the 2004 working began, ended up in Drillserves yard in Camborne

Worked many of these in Sallet Hole, mostly tracked, but one 'skid steer', wasn't there when it closed, so don't know what happened to them--.

Two dismantled ones in Ladywash standing in water sadly.

3 or 4 complete in the limestone workings under Halkyn, still move and greased up quite good.

One at Chatterley Whitfield- rescued from the 'New Pit' (the surface underground experience from mining museum days). In poor condition, and last I saw of it was in two sections in one of the buildings.

Graham Shatwell had at least one Eimco kicking around up on Moss Rake, but I don't know whether it was ex-Laportes or had been inherited from Jack Eidson?

I'm sure I saw two down at levant a couple of weeks ago. With regards to Crofty, I checked today, there are still at least 2 over there and I'm pretty sure there is a 3rd by North winder. IP: 81.157.126.241
