Hey,

Just wondering do you require permission to go underground at Rampgill Lead Mine, as I see the Nenthead Mines is nearby.

Thanks,
Tonto

Yes it is, but there is a fall along it some 100m in. Probably an easy dig project.

Ok, does anyone have any photos of the entrances to these levels? What level contains the new gate?

Thanks,

Ok, so I'm guessing the gate was some how removed from the Firestone Level?

Thanks,

No, no gates have been removed at all.

All gates are open except from Middlecleugh.

The new gate on Rampgill was to replace the previous one which was pulling the wall apart.
The mines on Alston Moor are generally gated but these are mostly open, the gates are usually ones that shut under gravity (so they can't be accidentally left open). The Nentsberry Haggs one has a bolt on it and Middlecleugh and Carrs are padlocked.

Yes Mike, I know I'm just making sure that you all know that it's the Firestone Level I want info on, not the Lead Mine + Who is actually the key holder for the Lead Mine?, Nenthead Mines?

I think that there is a misunderstanding maybe.

Nenthead gates are gates that are normally not locked except for Carrs and Middlecleugh
So to enter you just lift them on their top hinges.
They stay closed by gravity.

When originally fitted many years ago they had bolts which you had to undo, but over the years this has disappeared so now they just stay closed by their own weight.
