An excellent and fascinating review, thanks Pat.

What sort of equipment was involved in the testing?

I'd be really interested to see results for the same bolts in slate (given that's what some of us in N Wales are typically bolting - me included)

No sir, this here will do just fine

Hi All,

interesting review: of course, this was in effect a "worst case" scenario, not much different to what happened to the bolts at the end of the CRTT ladder bridge - an indirect longitudinal pull- and the results are still reassuring. I'd be even happier to hang off one of these if the pull was direct shear - at 90ยบ to the axis of the bolt, which is how we always try to place them.

Incidentally, can anyone tell me where I can get hold of some El Cheapo aluminium alloy bolt hangers?

Cheers,

JM

we used the hilti 20kn pull test kit,
I do think in slate you would want to knock off at least one third of what we got for our granite tests.
as johnnym said,"use them in shear"(mechanical bolts).
We did another test with using the 5 part expanding Rawls and 10mm twist hangers.
in granite it pulled out at 9kn
in messy cornish slate it pulled out at 6kn

glue ins are way to pass high loadings
