Still on Smile

See you all there.

Llion - which one is the Bwlch car park?

It'll probably be a somewhat shorter evening, I've never seen these chambers off the level in question so don't know whether it's a 5 minute explore or a whole evening's worth.

We shall have to wait and see Thumbs Up

There is, however, a bit more to see than the chambers that Simon mentions - there's also a couple of chambers and some tunnels (a bit wet in places) on the north side of the big sinc.

Car parking is at SH 7326 4560, just outside Manod quarry gate. It's just over a mile from the parking place to Cwt y Bugail quarry - and fairly level for the most part.

Weather is still looking good at the moment.

To be honest I don't know - I've never seen these chambers off the level.

Dave - can you advise? Is it worth me bringing the drill to rig either a handline or a descent - or are we just talking a scramble down?

I recall a passage about 40 ft down from the bit where you pass though to the sinc, which we deferred from descending without a handline last time we / I was there?

There's a rubbish wagon with waste on it - not piled on but carefully stacked (like walling) on it. It left me wondering if all waste was taken out like that in order to maximise the amount that could be put on one wagon.

I've not been below floor B (which is the floor you come in on) - the only time I've been in the Back Vein workings there were only two of us, we didn't have a great deal of time, I was already cold and wet (from visiting the tunnels I mention above) and I was aware of how much colder and wetter I was going to get on the walk back. (It was the day of the last Rhiwbach AN trip for those who remember the weather then - in fact not dissimilar to last Thursday now I think about it!)

I don't remember any natural anchors for SRT or handlines on floor B. We might be able to manage with just a handline down to chamber C3 - but it's a long walk for not much if we can't find anything to rig it from.

Michael Lewis's Blaen y Cwm and Cwt y Bugail Slate Quarries has a plan of the Back Vein. If I'm interpreting it correctly it seems that there's a number of places where vertical drops may be encountered (tunnels through pillars where the floor has been worked away in the chamber beyond) and it looks as if the only way down to D floor is one of those. I suggest we take SRT kits and sufficient tackle for rigging two pitches (though this may be total overkill and we might find that everything is free-climbable).

So, the management summary is: I don't know. Confused

Thanks Dave. Looks like I'll be taking the drill for a walk again (as long as I can find some bolts) - just in case they're needed.

Best pack your SRT kit.

And if it doesn't go anywhere it's Dave's fault Tongue Big Grin

It usually is. Sad

Still, if it doesn't go anywhere I can think of some other places people can go underground on their way back to the parking place.

I've found some bolts - but lent all my hangers out at the weekend - anybody got 1 or 2 kicking around?

Thanks Dave.

My bolts are all 12mm - hangers will probably just fit on though.
