Historic Reading chalk mine investigations
September 22nd, 2010

Work is due to start early next year on a £4.3million project to carry out further investigations and stabilisation works to homes in the Field Road and Coley District, which may be built on land where historical chalk mining took place.

Just found this on my conservation news feed..

I've been following this, plus similar works in the Hemel Hempstead area, for some time - the consultant I was working for at Combe Down was bidding for them, but eventually it all seemed to be taking too long and to be too subdivided and I stopped paying attention.

interesting stuff, though

I'd be interested to see underground chalk mines, I've done tunnelling in chalk and there were various issues with blocks dropping out of the crown .. there was a nasty accident of this sort resulting in a multiple amputation at the Channel Tunnel site IP: 212.58.194.53
