Wheal Tremar ??
Posted: 08/09/2010 11:19:57 Reply | Quote Does anyone have any information on the location and history of Wheal Tremar please? Presumably this was a Caradon mine and the only thing I can find out about it was that in about 1853 it sold its 2 year old, little used beam engine, built by Thomas & Co at Charlestown Foundry to the Thames and Severn Canal where it continued working until at least the end of the century. Shipment of the engine was through Looe. Thats it! Can anyone put any meat on that bone at all?? -- Always have a backup plan. |

I cannot find any reference after 1853 but my index database only goes up to 1860. If you want images of any MJ reference just ask. -- ''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change IP: 84.13.96.36 |

Posted: 09/09/2010 00:35:39 Reply | Quote I have long suspected that an adit is probably a source of the stream in Tremar (west caradon? ). I have a mate who lives in Tremar and where he is building his shed has a load of what I would consider lode tip material....comby quartz, growan, speckled "****" and some chalcopyrite flakes in gossan. Posted: 09/09/2010 09:05:45 Reply | Quote The engine was said to be only a couple of years old when sold in 1852/3 and purported to have done only a little work. Could it be a 'mine for show' job for the London money market? It perhaps has the hallmarks such as a 'Caradon' based name, a new engine installed even though there is no record apparently of any significant workings and the mine only appears from Roy's records to show up for a couple of years. Be nice to know where it stood though. Thanks for all info. -- Always have a backup plan. |
