A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Snailbeach SRT Exploration

Date & time: 06/06/2009 at 10:00

Details: Snailbeach was the largest and most productive metalliferous mine in Shropshire and has an impressive collection of both surface remains and accessible underground workings.

Visits to Snailbeach are organised with the Shropshire Mines Trust who manage the mine on behalf of the County Council.

This trip will offer a choice of routes, taking in a number of the accessible levels. The knowldege and experience of the guides will make for a very memorable day.

Please note, this is a trip requiring SRT competence including experience of passing rebelays.

BCA insurance cover is mandatory.

A very good book produced by the Shopshire Mines Trust detailing Snailbeach is reviewed here [web link] and available from Moore Books [web link]

Please indicate early if you wish to attend this trip as if large numbers of people wish to attend then additional guides will be requried.

This will be a fantastic trip, the people who look after the place have done a stirling job and make visitors feel very welcome. Very close to the M54 and A5 so travel is easy from most parts of the country.

Thumbs Up

Just bumping this event up.

Still plenty of time to put your name down for this, and a couple of spaces left. It is a thoroughly recommended trip to a mine that offers both excellent exploration and a very interesting history (and surface remains) guided by some very knowledgable people.

As a member of the SCMC, thought I'd just back the above commment up... This mine is well worth seeing; tThe surface remains are far more extensive than most places you'll see, set in a beautiful part of the country. The underground stuff is very interesting although I personally find the SRT terrifying! IP: 204.104.55.242

Hope everybody is looking forward to the Snailbeach trip this weekend.

Just to confirm meetup place and time.

Suggested meeting place in the Village Hall car park which is on the left after a narrow railway bridge.

If you are coming along the A488 Shrewsbury to Bishops Castle Road, after Minsterley the turning is on the left at a crossroads in Plox Green - it's a tight turn over a narrow stone bridge.

10am

I made a mistake in the directions, correct directions should be:

Suggested meeting place in the Village Hall car park which is on the RIGHT after a narrow railway bridge.

If you are coming along the A488 Shrewsbury to Bishops Castle Road, after Minsterley the turning is on the left at a crossroads in Plox Green - it's a tight turn over a narrow stone bridge.

Well.. what a fantastic day that was!

Certainly requires a re-visit though.... far too much to see in just one day. The surface features alone could take a day. This place should be on everyones list to visit Smile

A big thanks to our very knowlegeable guides too Flowers Flowers
