The first time I stayed at the hut, which was then leased by Eldon Pothole Club, was in December, 1974. That door was newish at the time having been constructed, as were the shutters, by Paul Foster aka Torchy. He worked for NW Gas and they 'provided' most of the parts.

I'm pleased to report that the original Torchy Door has been re-purposed for use as a door at the rear. The rotten bits were cut out and fresh timber put back. It's been clad in Sink-Sheet and has new hinges and fixtures Smile

Well done!
Torchy is still with us but sadly confined to a nursing home in Stockport.
Also, as a computer Luddite, he isn't online at all, shame really.
Some of us are in touch with him so will pass the message back.

Thanks Les, great to know he's still about. Would certainly appreciate you passing on my gratitude for the great work he did. His door, now with the rot fixed, will see me out now I expect. Kept all his steel hasps and fixtures.

Hi, slightly off topic but didn't want to start a new thread and guess you guys know cwmorthin well.

Myself and couple of friends are planning to visit cwmorthin on the 30th December, but was thinking about it last night and it dawned on me that the key may not be available on that date due to the christmas and new year break.

Can anybody confirm if this is the case as will need to find an alternative to explore if we can't get hold of the key.

Thanks in advance and sorry for jacking this thread!

Last few bits coming together! Big thanks to Pred for his weeks and weeks of work on the Managers Office! Walking up there 7am on his own in all weathers, getting the old girl back together.

His work on the building is now done. Well, for the moment. We'll let him have a rest then we'll point him at the compressor house opposite Smile

Thanks guys. Preds hard work mostly. Yes it's very cosy inside, pretty dry and welcoming. We've decided to use it as a place to keep wellies and give people a briefing that's out of the weather, for when its raining. I hope to work from there myself sometimes, as I can take my laptop and I get wifi from the 4G router in my car (just!).

Couldn't use it as a holiday let, there is no toilet for a start and no practical way of having one. Also it would require change of use planning permission which is a can of worms.

That said it has always been popular for overnight stays within the exploring community, and sometimes people stay in it.

One fireplace works fine (on left when looking at building from front), it is lined and has a stove. The one on the right is blocked off. It was knackered, loads of stone had fallen down and was blocking it, couldn't get them out and it would never have taken a lining. So just blocked it off.

Sounds very cosy, working old stoves are one of my 'things'.

heheh, yes I love a good stove. This isn't all that old, it's a small(ish) wood burner which is quite fussy to get a good output from. I've found it seems to work best on Hotmax fuel (super-dry sawdust pressed into cylinders) but kiln-dried hardwood logs do well too. It doesn't like any sort of coal at all.
