Just wondering if anyone knows if this is still accessible, as a I had a wander around the general area but couldn't find any entrances or workings of more than about 20 meters in length.

Thanks

yep it certainly is if it's the one in stanhope was in there a few weeks back a bit wet at the entrance with all the rain at the time would say the water would on been about a foot deep but normally it's not that bad would put odds on you have walked past the entrance

Thanks...We must have walked straight past it as you said (we didn't know exactly what we were looking for i just looked at the pictures here) spot on GR with the GPS even walked above the quarry...even though we thought we did a relatively thorough search... is the entrance at ground level? The 6 figure NGR is probably a little misleading.

Its pretty much visible from the main track, looking to the right. In the NE corner of a quarry.

Take an adjustable spanner to open the gate. Inside there is an interesting bodily contortion over a second 'gate' which is unlocked.

Anyone would think that thee had been something in there of value

We have always parked on the Stanhope side of the open gate which crosses the track.
The reason for this, is on one occasion I had a note placed on my windscreen asking me to phone Stanhope Police Station.
My wife had been phoned by them to ask where I was.
On another occasion, friends of ours, ours, were met by a policeman who asked them to accompany him to the station where they were 'grilled' by the Sargent as to what they were doing in the mine.
This was the late George Farr, a Hexham dentist and Norman Thomson, who was a lecturer at Carlisle Technical college.
Clearly there has been a history of animosity here!

Chris I think I must point out in deference to my late dentist friend he never sold any minerals.
His collection was sold by his family on his death.
During his life time he must have treated many of the people in the dale and consequently knew many of the miners in it.
I would also point out West Pasture mine was re-opened, purely to obtain specimens for the directors of SAMUK!

I have parked by the mine on a number of occasions, but last time we parked there we were asked, politely, to park on the other side of the gate in future. So that is what we now do, no point in irritating people unnecessarily Especially if they might have a key! IP: 85.211.117.100
