As mentioned above, if you want the official report on the incident you need to contact Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation, there should also have been an inquest on the death so there will be a Coroner's Court record.

If that is you trying to be polite, I wonder what you being rude would be like?

I see nothing pompous, biggoted, rude, nor sarcastic in what AR put. As a newcomer (joined today I notice) perhaps it is you that should be a little less rude?

Really... because his quote "God of sarcasm, thanks for everything" I personally feel said it all to be quite honest. But yes I apologize for my comment as it was abrupt. But I am dealing with a delicate issue. Thanks x IP: 81.106.149.208

AR's suggestion is quite practical and helpful.

This is a remarkably well mannered and civilised place for an internet forum and many people work hard to keep it so.

This seems a misunderstanding, Flowers

If you are new to a forum (any forum- not just this one) you need to lurk for a while to get the feel of the place. As has already been mentioned the "God of sarcasm...." thing is part of AR's signature. If you had spent a little time getting the feel of this forum (or indeed fully reading this thread) before you posted you would appreciated that.

AR was trying to be helpful and did not deserve your aggressive response. Unlike many forums Aditnow is a very civilised place, there is an unwritten rule that we all play nicely together here. Follow that one simple rule and everybody will get on fine. So ........ welcome to Aditnow FlowersFlowers

Yes. Hopefully Jo will come back on and see that the reply wasn't intended to be flippant or condescending in any way.

If Derbyshire CRO carried out the rescue / recovery, then their records would indicate which people were involved, and you would then possibly be able to approach Derbyshire to see if any of them were still with the club / around, and if they wished to speak about the matter.

If this is the '76 incident, as I recall it, it was an inexperienced 'rock bopper' who made a mistake -- my signature should be sufficient--!!!

P.S. Calling AR a 'Pompous biggot (sic)' is not going to make you many friends here, he is very well respected. ---

In the current version of my book, nearly complete, I have revised the account of Leslie Wheeler's death to incorporate the info given in this thread:
"On 26 August 1976, a rock about ten tons weight fell on and instantly killed Leslie Wheeler, aged 16, who had been chipping at its base for mineral specimens in Chaos Cavern. He lived in a Social Services home at Wolverhampton and was in a party of eight children who had only been underground for a few minutes."
The references I cite are:
(i) Derbyshire Times 3 Sep, 10 Sep, 17 Sep, 15 Oct 1976; (ii) Postings by catch22 and staffordshirechina on the Aditnow website 4 Aug 2015.

Glad it's all been sorted out Smile

You'll find that this is one of the most drama-free forums on the planet, in spite of having people on here who are right at the top of their field (or bottom of their mine, depending on your viewpoint).
A lot of us mere mortals stand slack-jawed in amazement at their work in finding and opening, shoring up and stabilising of old workings, their photography skills ... the really annoying thing is that they're so damned humble about it all !

Hi, I was one of the children in the cave at the time of the accident and I am getting quite angry at the comments that Leslie was chipping away at the cave wall to cause the rock fall. The cave guide was doing the chipping, he was the one who had the children carry his tool box of hammers and chisels. Our youth team leader was also chipping at the wall and Leslie was just standing by them shining his gas lantern. What was the name of the cave guide who tapped me on my helmet with his torch for daring to touch the entrance wall of the cave? R.I.P Leslie Wheeler IP: 86.165.181.63

Did the fall come from directly above then?

I am wondering is the "gas lantern" may have something to do with it due to rising hot air which has been the cause of an accident before, although from a fire not a lantern.
Was it a Tilley lamp or similar?

I have two points, firstly proper respect should be shown to the deceased, and secondly it is good thing for the facts to be known.

I'm not particularly convinced that asking questions of this sort on a previously unknown Internet forum, is the best approach.

With all due respect to those involved, could I suggest that anyone with anything directly relevant to offer, PM the OP, and the topic be edited and locked?

hi. no the large rock didn't come from directly above but it was quite high up the cave wall, Leslie Wheeler (who was standing upright) didn't see it coming. I was just walking back to the group after picking up some crystals off the floor and saw a shape come away from the wall, there was a warning shout from a member of staff and somebody tried to pull him away, but it was over in seconds. it wasn't a tilley lamp which has a glass covering around it? it was more a small naked gas flame like a candle but with a metal reflector around it and not much heat came off it unless you touched the flame IP: 82.40.172.233

That would be a simple carbide lamp - it's not relevant to the issue.
