You have to walk the ground with maps in hand to make sense of it all!

All your map links just show a blank grid for me Peter Sad

Do I need to be subscribed to something to view them?

I am having no trouble on Chrome, try a different browser.
Use the shift key to cover a small area and you get an an enlargement which will actually pan
Use right mouse button to save, its png file no choice.
Use Photoshop to open, use unsharp mask to sharpen (its backward to what it suggests) and save as a jpeg

Big Grin

EDIT
If different browser no work, try a different screen resolution. I'm 1920 X 1080 on a 24' wide screen

Back to Dinas

Here is a bit of a mystery
There is the remains of a line of trucks in the river, no no sign at all of chassis, axles, or bogies.

I wonder is the rolling chassis were put to some other use?

Them Smallmine boy`s don`t miss a trick.lol.

Do you have any survey plans for the workings Roy?

Looking at them maps, there certainly was a hive of activity up that valley,

A BGS map would be handy for that area,to determine the distances between the upper and lower workings.

I will have to get back on this tomorrow

I have been 'attempting' a 1964 map working from the 1964 OS

What the hell do I label the 'ramp'

Hopper, Incline, Chute, Bridge
I need a 'safe' word that could be anything
Laugh

Yes, read Roberts description and the well researched Croydon Caving Club webpage.

Quote:
" A wood and metal ramp remained in place up the middle of the Sychryd Gorge until a couple of years ago. This provided easy access for cavern to Will's Hole (and, despite its "Dangerous Structure" notices, probably safer access too) but all that is left now are crudely cut-off footings in the river bed."

While I am on
Robert, can I please use your description on the website and in a paper or booklet I will eventually write. It makes interesting reading, I will of course acknowledge you.

No, Roy, I meant just call it a "ramp". Somewhere I have a photo of it, or at least part of it. Or maybe it's one of our members who has a photo of it.

If you can find the photograph out that would be great. And if you do, can I have permission to use it please?

If its 'yes to all' please email me a scan direct.

Sorry Roy. It was a photo I used for a front cover of a club newsletter in the 1980s when I was etching them into wax covered stencils! It wasn't mine, and I am not sure who lent it to me. I could put out a plea to all our most ancient members to see if it was any of them. You never know, there may be other photos.

Thanks anyway. I don't want to make waves, but it would have been nice to able to use it.

I'll ask anyway as we don't have any record of it in our website gallery.

Thanks
I have been trying to put together a history of the mines from what is on the web and other material including some postings on this forum. In places I have had to be intuitive.
Please take a look and then make any criticisms or suggestions.

I have to visit the site again, and then hope to be able to put together an archaeology trail

Very nice report.Smile

The rail map site I linked to does have a few major discrepancies in certain areas but the apparent tramway to an area near the top entrances is interesting.

I'll have a dig through a few hundred slides as I must have an image of the 'ramp' in the 70s somewhere.

Been again today Sunday 4th Oct.

Just inside the entrance there is a bad roof condition, looks about ready to drop. Best solution would be a stick of bang to bring it down but cant do that.
Next thought was proping but hammering the prop in could bring something down on me. Finally, dept of easy solutions, a roll of PVC coated fencing wire, make a 'cordon' round the area and post some warning notices. Hopefully peoples sense of self preservation will prevail. Its an area as well where people gather, typically wife's and girlfriends waiting for their menfolk to return from a bit of exploring.

(click image to open full size image in new window)

Right funny game though putting 10mm bolts in. Over on the right of the pic you may see a couple, to seat to full length the rock was impossible! DeWalt 24V with a heavy duty battery just about got 4 in for half of their 80mm length!
Yet over at the back it was like drilling butter with bits dropping of the wall.
In mid Wales the battery does about 9 in mudstone to full depth.
