As of 13.00 today i can confirm that Box back door is NOT locked. Chances are the bolt will be replaced at some point but no sign of padlocks on any of the Box gates. Padlocks were undoubtly fitted as the packaging was left by back door. Looks like whoever did it shops at B+Q!!. Me and Root did a quick litter sweep and took 3 bags out. Big thanks to the Quarrymans for allowing us to get rid of the rubbish in their bins.

What about the other entrance? And how does this affect any access arrangements?
Does anyone know why it was done in the first place? Have any access arrangements been violated?

Reading around it looks like the access arrangements to what is an SSSI and protected bat roost has been violated by people having fires and BBQs in there.
So the access controling body has exercised it's right to close and secure the entrances.

Then illegal actions have been taken to damage and remove locks.

Maybe they should let people know before they just turn up and lock it? Also maybe natural England might want to update the SSSI report, as the only one available from 2012 states bat numbers are up, the conditions are favorable, and they've accepted access cannot be controlled.

Everyone making assumptions.

In the event that the locks were fitted by some one who had no authority to do so then they would constitute a 'Private nuisance' to anyone else who had a right of access, and that person would be within their rights under common law to remove those locks.

Just a point of law.

Who would have legal access to Box these days?

Who owns Box these days?

Before i begin, all that follows is my own opinion etc etc.

Way back when the gates first went on, a padlock was going to be fitted. This went down like a lead ballon and the current arrangement of a bolt was adopted instead. It has worked, and still works well. The only issue being over the last few months bolts have been going missing. These are being replaced as and when by various locals out of their own pocket.

The various numpties selling pics of fire eating etc to the Daily Wail did not help matters, but i think this mob have got bored now and moved on.

As for the padlock on Back door.....the only evidence of padlocks being fitted was packaging from 3 of them. There was no sign of a lock on BD on Saturday, and none on Jacks or the bat grill early morning. I personally think there was no padlock. I rang the emergency number today, gave 2 rings then cut off!.

I have spoken today with Hanson and have posted the information to the CSCC Website
http://cscc.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=news:start

I have been in communication with Hanson concerning this issue.
It appears the site was locked after several high profile incidents concerning groups getting lost and having to be released by the police and emergency services. Hanson have indicated that they want to work with the caving and mine exploring community to maintain legitimate access to the site but are concerned about their liability.

I am in discussion with Hanson and will report back as soon as there is more information.

Les Williams
CSCC C&A Officer.

Are the incidents being referred to the ones which lead up to the original gating or have there been more recent ones?

I believe there have been a few recently with people getting lost and having to be let out of the A4 entrance, the Box system works, better than any padlock or key, seems Hanson may have been a bit hasty and realised that they stood more chance of locking someone in due to the high volume of traffic and removed the locks

I shall draw a plan that can be sent to Hansons. Its an idea that I have had to stop the removal of the bolts while keeping the same system in place. I will send the email to Les and he can send it to Hansons. Basically what would happen is the bolt will be shorter in length as there is no need to have a bolt that's 2" long when a 1/4 inch will do the same job. The bolt will be undone the same way but it will hit a metal plate preventing it from being fully removed. It will have a hole in the end so a socket or Allen key fit through it. Its a cheap simple and piratical solution. Just need to get a welder to each entrance.
