A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: See How They Run at Caphouse Colliery, Overton, West Yorkshire

Date & time: 23/03/2013 at 10:00

Details: Our yearly weekend celebrating National Science & Engineering Week will be happening again on 23-24 March. As normal we'll be powering up our Dosco Mk.2 roadheader, Eimco rocker shovel, workshop line shafting, British Jeffrey Diamond 'Ace' coal cutter and 1876 steam winder and we'll also be giving talking in the stableyard. Our narrow gauge ex-Prince of Wales Colliery Clayton battery underground BO-BO will be working the line connecting both ends of the Museum.
New for this year will be some special 'see how they run' underground tours, on these we'll be powering up an Eimco 613 bucket, running a short demontration length of endless haulage using an 80 year old compressed air haulage engine and demonstarting a few compressed air drills.
The whole event is free, although there is a £2.00 charge for your pit check to go underground on the normal tour or the special tour - if you want to do the special its best to book in as soon as you arrive at the museum (we'll refund the £2.00 if you hand your check back in, or you can keep it as souvenir and we'll Gift Aid it and raise a bit more money for the Museum.
Hope to see you at Caphouse Colliery (Overton, West Yorkshire, WF44RH) (I'll be around and about on the Sunday if anyone wants a chinwag)

Can I suggest that "New Events" should include locations and area in the introduction, it took me two links to discover I could not get to this very interesting (Looking) event, a bit of a trial on my connection!.

In fairness they are normaly titled 'a mince around Cwmorthin' or suchlike, this one just sounds a bit random because the museum has its own name for the day separate to this website. IP: 217.212.231.79

Appreciate some people may not have the best internet connections, but two clicks is hardly the end of the world.

Shall certainly be going to this, will be nice to see it working rather than rusting for a change.

Comments noted and event details amended, just goes to show you shouldn't rush these things the first time around - but it was late on Friday afternoon and there were 6 six pints of Taylor's Landlord calling me out of the office Big Grin

Regarding the rust, we do a very good line in this Oops seriously though I'm currently working on a project that should hopefully see our future projects compound disappear with the outside items finding an undercover home. We've also just had a quinqueneal building survey done and will be doing a little bit of sensitive refurbishment on the historic buildings once I've got all the listed buiding consents through from the local council...

What a pity about the date this is on- it's the same day as the Drakelow vist, otherwise I suspect there'd be a lot more of us going! Sad Ah well, let us know when it's on again next year! Thumb Up

Definitely worth a look if you can. I happened to drop on last years event by acciden whilst passing, ended up there all day Thumbs Up

Great to see these machines in action, although certainly not on a par with them being used for real underground.

Hi Darren
I believe there is another function for Geology week at the mining museum on the 27 April which will have various types of mining.
There are stands and also short talks on Geology in the morning. In the afternoon there are lectures on the main extractive industries in the North of England, such as Coal resources, metal mining, potash, aggregates and quarrying.
I have heard a rumour that John Goodchild could be there for a lecture but can't confirm this.

Hi R,

I believe our education team are involved with this, details can be found on the Yorkshire Geological Society webpage, its on Saturday 27th April and is a free event open to all; I'm not sure if I should create as an event on here myself as I wouldn't want to be treading on the organisers toes Surrender if they have plans to do so themselves (will ask though).

Would I right in thinking digital cameras will be contraband on the underground tour, so it won't be possible to get any photos/videos of the machines in action ? IP: 145.8.104.65

I'm afraid this is the case, due to normal HMI led regs concerning batteries and the like we can't allow cameras etc. on public tours. IP: 217.34.209.206

Guys we're suffering a bit with drifting snow and the event looks like its going to be curatiled to what's available imeadiately round Caphouse Colliery itself tomorrow (Saturday 23rd), which means the Dosco and Eimco rocker shovel probably won't be available, we do hope to resume something like normal service on Sunday (24th) - keep an eye on our facebook page for updates [web link] IP: 217.34.209.206
