Thanks, yes I should have mentioned that I wasn't thinking of a GPS one. I hadn't realised that some Garmins have a barometric altimeter built in. We have an Etrex 30 so I'll try experimenting with it

Lidl "POWERFIX 30m Multi-Purpose Cord" cord proved itself to be useful for the pull side of a pull-through. At 5 or 6mm it's more substantial than paracord and more comfortable to pull yet still a lot
