In 1977, Dr.Hashem Etminan Discovered The Porphyry Style Mineralisation For The First Time At Sungun

In 1977 Dr. Hashem Etminan discovered for the first time the presence and significance of a porphyry style mineralisation at Sungun, north west of Ahar, Eastern Azarbaijan. Sungun had been recognised and described by many geologists for many decades as a skarn type deposit. Based on works carried on by government agencies and private sector it had been classified as a lead-zinc and copper with minor gold skarn type deposit of non economic value. The Ministry of Industries and Mines of Iran until 1977 has registered it as an abandoned minie at the time that Etminan visited Sungun. Hashem Etminan after finishing his thesis on Sarcheshmeh and on his return to GSI in 1977,submitted a proposal to Dr Eftekharnejad, deputy director of Geological Survey of Iran in order to review and re-evaluate certain alteration zones in Iran with a new point of view based on experience that Etminan had gained during his extensive research and works on Sarchehashmeh and several other barren and productive porphyry copper deposits.Etminan specifically was interested in north west of Iran where a number of alteration zones had been reported. Ahar area, NW,Iran, Eastern Azarbaijan appeared to Etminan to have good potential and worthy to commence his investigations. Hashem Etminan for the first time discovered the presence and significance of porphyry style mineralisation at Sungun and officially announced it to the Director of Geological Survey of Iran. He subsequently submitted his comprehensive report to justify his points of views based on his observations and studies of geological characteristics, structural geology, rock types, hydrothermal alterations supported by fluid inclusions and petrographic studies on discovery of porphyry type mineralisation at Sungun being of such significance. He pointed out that based on a huge favourable alteration zone and after detailed exploration program Sungun has potential to become a porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit comparable to world class ones such as Sarchehshmeh, Bingham and San Manuel. He suggested a detailed exploration program to be launched according to what he proposed in his report of 1977. Hashem Etminan also requested an exploration permit on behalf of Geological Survey of Iran. Mr.Reza Asefi ,the then Director of GSI, submitted Etminan's report on discovery of Sungun with his supporting recommendation to Iranian Minister of Industry and mines in1977.
