Old Vein D2W

This is Chamber 2 West, in the Old Vein. It's the largest continuous chamber in Cwmorthin stretching from floor E at its foot, driven all the way up continuously to almost the Floor 2 horizon.

The camera here was placed on D floor (the largest remaining flat surface), with the drop down to E just behind. Looking up you can see an explorer pulling themselves over a Tyrolean (zipline) which spans where the B floor bridge would have been had the rockmen saw fit to make one. Way up higher again, about lake level (Floor 1) is positioned another explorer with a large 1930's flashgun.

With a bit of effort we managed to get a direct line for the shot so that the flashbulb fired directly behind the explorer to silhouette him, although clarity is lost to the outline due, I would think, to the natural moisture in the air diffusing the intense light over the long distances. The bright light does make it look like the chamber breaks out to surface, but it does not, it is deep underground.

At the bottom of the shot in the foreground sits the remains of a large wagon, its wheels having come off. This used to be parked in a level on C floor, until around 2005 - 2008, when someone for some reason saw fit to push it off the end of its track into the void of Chamber 2W. It fell down to D floor and smashed, residing here possibly now for eternity.

The Tyrolean in the photo is part of Go Below's new Hero Xtreme route which is designed to be able to show people the lofty upper reaches of the western chambers in the Old Vein, workings which were previously inaccessible for the most part.
