Wheal Prosper (Rinsey) Tin Mine (United Kingdom)

Description by ICLOK

Started in 1860 probably on extension of Wheal Trewavas Lodes producing mainly tin and possibly small quantities of copper. In June 1862 the mine was 40F below adit and was paying costs yet by 1866 the mine was closed. The mine had at one time a 20" rotatative engine for stamping (16 heads) and for winding, no trace exists today however. The 30" pumping engine house has survived on engine shaft (50 F Deep) and was stabalised by the National Trust. The engine house dates from 1860. There are two other shafts in the area approaching the engine house including Mitchells Whim shaft (40F below adit) which has been conserved with a bat castle over the opening. The adit is 27F below the cliff surface and can be reached by a scramble up the rocks, beware of tide and loose rock!!!
