The remains are situated on the north side of the road from Mojacar to San Juan de los Terreros. There were quite a few smelters along the coastal strip between the Sierra Almagrera and Garrucha but modern housing developments have obliterated all those west of Villaricos except for this one. Only the recession has saved it from the advancing bulldozers. I have been unable to find its proper name so have called it after the nearest settlement. The flue system is still in reasonable condition and is extremely complex. Whilst flues to the smelters in the Sierra Almagrera wind round hillsides and terminate at a chimney on top, in the conventional way, those at Palomares head north, divide, intersect, and return to the smelter. This can be seen quite clearly on Google Earth. There is very little left of the buildings but there is a lot of slag of various sizes scattered about and the flues (mostly of walking size within) are mainly intact except for a few collapses.
