Discovered in 1866 by Richard Daintree and William Hann, this is considered to be the first metal mine discovery in Far North Queensland. A parcel of 22% Cu ore was mined mostly by open-cut method but distance from the coast and transport difficulties mitigated against continuing the operation. The mine was reopened in 1901 through to 1922. Ore was smelted on site for some time and also sent to the smelters at Chillagoe. The shaft was reopened in the early 1970s but no production eventuated. A comprehensive history can be found at : http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/chims/placeDetail.html?siteId=325
