Unusually for a Surrey chalk pit, the Colley Hill pit was worked to provide whiting - a pigment. The whiting works was about half a mile to the south, and a house now stands on the site called "The Whitings". The pit and works was owned by George Taylor, famous Victorian photographer. It dates from the first decade of the 20th century.
