Hello, I just registered. I am a member of Vieille Montagne Heritage, an association founded in Kelmis (La Calamine) Belgium the birthplace of VM. VM was also active in Nenthead.
I was reading a book about the mines of Alston. In this beautiful book I saw the notation NY77033700. I have only worked with Google Earth in the past and did not recognize this notation.
Can anyone teach me to use this notation? I found a map on your site and already understood that NY was the map of the area.
Can I enter the desired location directly from the format "NY77033700". How??Confused

It's our UK Ordnance Survey map reference.

Enter the ref in the search box on an OS mapping site, like the one here. (Use the binocular symbol).

Thank you, it's that simple.
The book "The mine of Alston Moor" by R.A. Fairbairn is full of references to locations. Now I can use it. By asking one gets to know everything ...
Man, there were a lot of mines in Nenthead.Shocked
If you ever want to know more about Vieille Montagne you can always contact me. Either I can help you or I know someone who can help you.
Greetings from Belgium and thank you for the help.

Hi V.M heritage, yes I think that you might be able to help us, here in the UK. As you might be aware, much of our records of this company were destroyed during the war?
Consequently we are lacking in photographs of their operations, at Nenthead and on Alston moor, so if perchance you come across photos of their operations here please let us know?
Thanks John Lawson, interested in nenthead mines.

Hi John,

first question and I'm already in trouble. Maybe I promised too much. I've scanned the photo archive of VMAngleur at the University of Li├Ęge. More an 2,000 photos from various VM site. Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Sardinia, North Africa. And ... 1 photo of the Rampgill Mill. But this photo is widely known. I will deliver it to you if you want. In the meantime I have asked the same question to my colleague from VMH in Nenthead. I'm waiting ...
So, of all VM sites except Nenthead. Sorry...

Hi VM. Heritage as you probably are aware, we do have one of the Krupp mill, although,I am not sure which of the various ones it is?
Other information on the history of V,M, operations will be found in chapters in various Nenthead books including two centuries of In industrial welfare a history of the London Lead company by Arthur Raistrick Also a history of lead mining in the Pennines by Arthur Raistrick and Bernard Jennings..finally I recommend the life work of the Northern !ead Miner by Arthur Roberts and Arthur Raistrick. This latter book is essentially a picture gallery of many of the V.M. and other contemporary photos of the Pennine area during the period of working between the wars!
Well worth you chasing this one!

Thanks for the tip.

That is a very interesting book. I already have a signed copy. Alastair is my colleague at VMHeritage. I meet him every year at the General assembly of VMHeritage in Kelmis "La Calamine" Belgium. We email regularly. He is a huge help in figuring out the history of Vieille Montagne in Nenthead. Through the advice of Alastair I bought the book by R. A. Fairbairn: The mines of Alston Moor. Very detailed with many references to the Ordnance Survey map. VM was briefly mentioned herein.

Today I received the book via the post: "Life and work of the Northern Lead Miner."
You haven't exaggerated. A wealth of photos. The photos are from the Beamish Museum, as are those from Alastair Robertson's book. Maybe it's possible to get photos in "Beamish". I'll have to figure out the procedure.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi VMHeritage, certainly you were able to purchase copies of their photographs.
I did it in the days before we had our on line facility!
In those days you had to go to the museum and look through their file of small photos.pick out the ones you were interested in and then psybtonhavebthem processed and sent to you!
My late friend Arthur Roberts worked with them for some time! He used to tell me of how he would heat about a photograph and then persue it so as to to get a copy for Beamish,
