Croesor Rhosydd TT - latest gear/boat situation?

Hi All - am planning on attempting the CRTT for the first time in February with 3 others (all with SRT and mine experience). From the discussion on this forum it sounds like there's been a fair amount of traffic recently, so thought it worthwhile to see if people know what the gear and boat situation is?

I think that @ChrisBones69 was there a week or so ago?

Thanks for any advice!

the obvious reply - :

4 experienced exploreses - should have no problem making room in thier packs for :

25m SRT rope + sling and 2 mailions
25m SRT rope + sling and 2 mailions
1 inflatable boat & pump
1 group shelter and emergency gear kit

its formated like that - cos 4 loads

with that you should be able to negotioate almost any curcumstance

and if you should be unable to proceed or retreat - be in good fettle when NWCRO arrive to assist you

Tracyclimber that was the day we were planning on going! We're arriving on evening of 21st, staying in Blaenau, and probably a quick jaunt into Rhwibach or something similar on the 23rd before heading home. IP: 194.35.233.67

Hi all.

The first two abseils are ok although the ropes are old, dirty and getting rather fluffy. They will need replacing at some point soon.

PLEASE CHECK THEM BEFORE YOU JUMP ON THEM. Especially the last few feet as they often get damaged at the bottom where rocks are dropped off the edge.

The first lake crossing is no longer a zip-line, it's a cable crossing with a hand line. You will not require a pulley.

The ladder bridge and all the other crossings are absolutely fine and still good fun. Again, no pulley required at all now.

The Canadian canoe in the Chambers of Horrors was still afloat but a few times I have found the pull back string gets caught up at the far side.

Take a 50m rope as a pull through just in case the abseil ropes are dead and take a dinghy as you simply can't rely on the canoe being available.

Other than that, all good and still really good fun.

Hi Tony, your last posting was 4 years ago.
How are you? Are you in the UK or US?

Be great to meet up some time

Hi Roy Flowers

Yes, a long time indeed.
Yes, still in the UK, always have been.

I do have a quick look on your lamp forum now and again just for interest. Been a long time since I have played with lamps.

I am often puzzled why people bother with the boats. I have always worn a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid and swam across. Be warned however I once got tangled in one of the ropes across the flooded section between Croesor and Rhosydd which was quite exciting for a bit since it was tightening my arms around my body. The beauty of a buoyancy however aid is that whatever happens you float, you can even be vertical in the water and still have your head above the surface. Easy to carry and no crap left behind. Boat, nah! You need a spaceship:

Note for ChrisBones69 - no spaceships* were left in the mine

* Nor crocodiles, pirate ships or sex dolls for that matter

Went through on Saturday.
All fine. The new rigging is well done.
As previously said, no need for a pulley now (I miss the zip line though.).
Ropes looked OK, if a bit tired and fluffy.
Canoe was still in, too.

Good luck, it’s a great trip. Take a plan though, finding No.9 Adit in Rhosydd can be a challenge.

Thanks.

Leif.

Thanks for the review of the rigging. Thumb Up

Speedy.

You must’ve just been behind us.
We went underground around that time, perhaps a touch earlier? We were out before 3, but were only a party of two.
The current rigging is positively luxurious compared to the ghetto rigging I’m used to under the Northern Pennines. Good effort!

Leif.

Must have just missed you. We also came up from Croesor not Cwmorthin side.

There must have been a group go through earlier on Friday or possibly Thursday last week too as on Friday morning I found a crappy LED torch in the whispering chamber, not far from the bottom of the 1st abseil. It was till on, just.

Kinda proves the quality of the equipment some people rely on, the fact that this torch was on yet they dropped it and didn't realise...! Blink

I wonder how much further he got before he thought, "Boy, it's really dark in here!". Confused

What color was said torch?
My accomplice found a head torch in that side chamber before the climb and the incline up, Croesor.
We also found a silver torch at the bottom of the first abseil.

Bewilders me how people manage to loose something so integral to an underground trip, but hey-ho...

Leif.

Yes, the one I found was a silver torch too, driven off 3 AA cells. Strange coincidence. I took it out or else it just adds to the rubbish people leave behind.

Sounds like someone decided to leave torches rather than bread crunbs! Blink

Yes, very true. I have swam in those chambers and it is bloody cold. To expect everyone who travels through to swim is a bit much. Kinda makes it interesting if one of the party is struggling....

The problem with swimming across the chambers is what you do with your Harness, SRT kit, spare rope, food, drink, etc,. I guess you let your mate bring them across in his dunghy! Laugh
